Too expensive, lousy leasing office/communication

If you want value for money, this apartment complex isn't for you, in my opinion. Gatewater Landing advertises 4-star service, but in three years I've seen no evidence of that. Broken rain gutters haven't been fixed; you sometimes wait months for basic repairs (my screen door and shower head were never fixed; I finally had to fix them myself); the grounds are very unsanitary because of all the dog poop everywhere; the garbage bins are usually overflowing; if you leave a message with the rental office, they rarely call you back; the rental office hours are arbitrary and change seemingly at whim; snow removal in winter is haphazard at best; hot water doesn't stay hot during a shower or bath; the rental office seems to go through help quicker than McDonalds goes through cashiers; rent amounts are arbitrary -- you may pay $730 but the person who moved in the month before you may be paying $760.

On the plus side, and there are some positives, the apartments, even the one-bedrooms, are very roomy and offer hardwood floors, big walk-in closets in the bedrooms, eat-in kitchens, and nice-sized balconies, it's right on a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay (perfect if you love water activities) with its own fishing pier (though everyone and their brother uses it, and it's usually trashy), and is right next door to a marina. It's also convenient to everywhere--downtown Baltimore, DC, BWI Airport, the shops on Ritchie Highway. We also have a top-notch maintenance guy (the only decent thing about the staff).

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless you need a place to live right now and don't plan on staying for long. Most tenants don't seem to stay more than a few years. There are nicer and cheaper apartment complexes in the area, so take the time to look around.

Also, word of advice: before you sign on the dotted line, here or any complex, first knock on doors and ask tenants what they think about living there.
