Very nice units, but the community is iffy
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 1/27/2003
Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2003
This is a review of our unrenovated 2 BR townhouse on Crainmont Dr. East, behind the Popeye?s Chicken. We pay a rate that will most likely be raised when the apartment is renovated.
Comments will be placed in order by ranking categories:
Parking:
P has never really been a problem. There is one assigned spot to each residence, and plenty of "visitor" spots. The worse that I?ve ever noticed was having to park 4-5 spots down from my home, so there?s no problem at all. The parking lot is lit, and I feel it is secure.
Noise Level:
This is the reason why we are moving out of this residence. When we first moved in, it was a very nice and quiet location, just what we needed. The area is located below an airplane heading, so occassionally you?ll have 5-10 seconds of planes flying over. People told me I?d get used to it, and I have. You just learn to temporarily turn up the volume on the TV, or use captioning.
However, over the months, noise problems with residents started getting bad, and getting worse. There is an apartment community located behind the next-door Target that produces some very unsavory characters. They loiter in the Target parking lot, blasting loud music that we can hear throughout our home. You would think that the windows would insulate the noise, but they actually make it louder and more focused. The noise is louder in our house than it is outside.
Then, over time, the overall atmosphere changed here. It?s now more young adults, and minorities. Not a problem, but there is 24/7 playing of bass music and loud exhausts racing down the streets. When I say 24/7 bass music, I can?t stress that enough. I lay awake almost every night, unable to sleep, with various cars playing music throughout the area. Even 3 or 4 o?clock in the morning, you can still hear it. During working hours, it quiets down a lot, but during the afternoons and evenings, it?s almost unbearable. In one instance, there was a car parked at the opposite end of our little circle, at least 300 feet away, yet the noise was very audible in our home.
There was also a problem when new neighbors moved in next to us. From the very start, it was loud bass music throughout the day, loud enough to rattle the paintings on our walls. We let it go for a few days, but after weeks it continued, every single day. We made a call to the office and made a complaint, but the noise didn?t go away. The neighbor would never answer the door, so I could never speak with him. I finally had to write a threatening note to get them to stop, otherwise we couldn?t sleep at night. However, the problem came back a month later, and continued for months. I continually tried to ignore it, but did have to call the police once on them. I have made half a dozen complaints about this individual over 4-5 months, for excessive bass from his stereo and TV, and it never was turned down, and got to the point where the neighbor made repeated physical threats against me. I reported this to the property manager, who just simply wrote him a note asking him to stop.
Grounds:
Not too bad. They have regular workmen that come by to trim shrubs, and paint the exteriors. The grounds look very nice. There is occassional litter on the grounds, but that?s almost the norm for this city.
Safety:
For our unit, there was good visibility of the parking lot, especially with the bay windows. There?s ample lighting outside, also. The only thing that bothers me is some of the residents, but that?s to be found anywhere. Teenagers loitering and smoking, and quite a few people driving fast through the parking lot, etc.
Construction:
Our unit is an unrenovated unit, due to be redone when we move out. So, the comments here probably wouldn?t apply to anyone looking to move in. However, for having older equipment, it?s been trouble free. The walls and paint are in good shape, though I don?t like the feel of the walls. All the appliances have been trouble free. Our in-sink disposal stopped working once, and was fixed the next day. Twice we?ve had loose electrical connections upstairs. Both times our calls were answered within minutes and were fixed immediately.
As far as insulation, it?s decent for the windows. It does nothing for the noise, but it does a decent job of mostly keeping the cold out in the winter. In the summer, the second floor becomes very hot, while the bottom floor stays cool, but I hear this is common in townhomes.
Maintenance Service:
Very good maintenance men. The apartment community has a website that allows you to make maintenance requests on-line, which is a real convienance. Requests have always been answered promptly, and problems fixed. They?re nice guys, even when called out on emergency calls late at night.
Office Staff:
Very nice people to work with and talk to. They are very accomodating and pleasant to speak with.
Overall:
This is a very nice home, and a good community. Their website and office staff make living here convienant and enjoyable. It?s very close to I-97, and to local stores. The grounds are very nice and taken care of, and the maintenance men are very helpful. We considered this to be a location we?d live at for a few years, until the noise problems came up, as it?s only a few miles from my work, and close to Ft. Meade, NSA, and other places I visit. However, now, we?re moving as far away from Glen Burnie as we can. These apartments are definitely better than many in the area, including the neighboring GreenTree apartments. But, the riff-raff that have inundated those communities is spilling into here.
