My husband, daughter and I have lived in Southern Management property for a little over a year and a half and in Lakeside North since Nov.2007.The other property in Laurel was noisy and had parking issues. It was otherwise "ok"-not more. This apartment is in a very nice setting-lots of trees,flowers-and the police are right down the road. The few things that needed attending to when we moved in were fixed right away and in January new windows were put in-great for warmth and noise control. We have a cat and dog now(did not in Laurel)and this is a very pet friendly place. We did not need a pet deposit(you will need vet records and a picture)but there is a fee of $20 per pet added to rent.I think it is worth it.The only problem is that while there are always open spots where a second car could go,they are reserved.I think if we had the same amount of spots, but no reserved ones, everyone would have a space.Of course, there would need to be some policy about them being cars that are used and moved regularly to prevent abuse, but finding an open visitor spot is a BIG drag.

The reason I moved here is because of reserved parking. If a family has 3 cars or 2 they should be allowed one parking space and the others need to find parking where available in the community. This complex is full of UM students who do a lot of apartment sharing which may result in several people to one unit with a vehicle... all should not be allowed to take up the parking areas and take the free shuttle which runs in the community and leave their cars indefinitely. DO NOT GET RID OF THE ASSIGNED PARKING!

I agree that assigned parking should stay. I've been thinking about a way of apportioning the spaces more fairly ever since I moved in, but I haven't come up with a solution that doesn't require far more administrative effort than the current system. The best I've come up with is a system where you get one space per bedroom, but if you don't need the space, you can "lease" it back to the complex (say -$25 on your monthly rent), and then somebody who needed it could "lease" it from the complex ( $35 on the rent). The "lease" would be renewable every 6 months so that if you needed the space back, you could get it back. However, this would require a lot of work to keep track of it all; the $10 difference between the rent fee would be to cover the admin costs.
