Don't do it

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2005

We moved here two years ago, not expecting it to be the Ritz, but at least expecting some value for the money we were paying-which honestly is way too much. It has gotten steadily worse. The rent jumped by 100 dollars. Within a month we were confronted with a mold problem in the bathroom and kitchen, a leaking dishwasher, and bad insulation which does not provide healthy air circulation, adding to the mold especially in hot weather.
Pest control comes and goes but it hardly makes a difference. We have had to take care of the roach/ant problem ourselves, or it doesn't get done. Maintanence has, I admit, improved since we first moved in at least for emergencies(they actually acknowledge emails now), but that doesn't do anything improve the condition of the apartment. Water is cut off with maybe a few hours' notice, the trash disposal hasn't worked since we've moved here and nothing has been done about it because of the way the infrastructure is screwed up (they would have to work on the whole house). Paint is peeling in places, not fun since they made a big to-do about having us sign lead warnings.
The floors are creaky and you can hear people moving around above you. Neighbors are loud, rude, and violent. We have some punks upstairs who enjoy periodically setting off the fire alarm with a wrench and running off (I saw them doing this), two around us who throw regular parties and tear up whatever is in sight, and several who use the laundry facility as a toilet. The so-called key to the laundry room is ineffective as we seem to be the only people on the block to have one and anyone can walk in and out without repercussions. I had my clothes and blanket stolen out of the dryer. Management of course did nothing but laugh. The community center down the street is a hotbed for crime and-as we found out one day coming home-outdoor sex. There have been numerous shootings and robberies in the area, and the proximity to shopping and transportation only seems to make it worse. Cops routinely stop and arrest people around the main highway, and the inner streets are worse at night. I recall moving here and walking by someone handcuffed face down on the lawn with cops around him.
To their credit they seem to be improving somewhat, but not enough to make it worth your money or your time. I would not recommend it especially if you have children, it's not a healthy or a safe environment. The only plus is that they've made it simpler for you to get out of your lease.
