I am looking to move here sometime in March 08 (potentially the first of March). So, I need to know from the satisfied and not so satisfied tenants where to live, building/location specific would be nice, and then ABSOLUTELY where NOT to live. I do not want to encounter any pests (such as bedbugs!)or people that bring pests with them from their place of origin. I don't want to encounter break-ins. I don't want to encounter people that don't have a 9 to 5. I don't want to encounter illegal activity participants (such as weed smokers, and/or drug dealers of any kind). I do want to be around young/middle-aged professionals that respect themselves and others, and therefore respect their community. So, PLEASE ADVISE me which area is good/better/best! I am a professional, single mother of school-aged children (that may be walking to/from school by themselves). and I do believe in Jesus, but I want to minimize the potential risk of putting myself and children in any potentially dangerous situation(s). I can minimize roaches, and possibly mice (even though I rather not encounter them at all), but I do not want to be near anybody that may have transported BEDBUGS to this part of the U.S. PLEASE ADVISE, building numbers and street locations will be very helpful. I'm looking to move into a 2bdrm, 1ba. PLEASE ADVISE
By the way, is the corner of Breezewood Dr. and Springhill Ln (6200) a bad/good/better location' Let me know the pros and cons.
Thank you in advance! I appreciate all honest opinions.

I would advise you not to move into this community at all, especially with the fact that you have young children. I know that 5805 & 5807 Cherrywood Lane have no issues with mice, roaches or bed bugs. You still have to live with the fact that unruly, loud and obnoxious individuals pass through this community at all hours of the evening because the Shell station sells liquor and many people patron this location. You will have to deal with a rental office that does not respond to your compliants, as well as a maintenance team. Unfortunately SHL has a mixture of working and non-working individuals. The non-working individuals have no problem staying up all night and keeping their music or television on. Hopefully, you will be able to sleep through the noise. It seems that you have already decided in your mind to move into this complex. Keep in mind prayer changes things!

My advise to you, is to buy a private home. Everything you are looking for can only be had when you own private property. There is no rental property that is perfect. I have been renting for 40 years (by choice) and places I have lived always have some or all the of the problems you are concerned about. No matter if you rent the more upscale apts. they too have many, many problems (I have lived in the expensive ones also). Most individuals are under the impression that the more money you pay the better the property. WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! Again, just purchase your own private property, but you just might have neighbor problems there as well (loud music, gangs, drugs, etc,). In the more affluent areas family's coverup the problems with money. We now live in a society where most individuals are only concerned with what they want. I wish you luck in finding the near perfect residence. Maybe you move into the wilderness and only be bothered by the animals.

Check the Greenbelt News Review. Usually crime at SHL takes up one entire page of the Crime Blotter. You can pick it up at most of the stores in the older part of Greenbelt. The previous reviewer is correct in that owning a property doesn't guarantee the elimination of problems either. I lived in a home in Columbia Maryland for 6 years and had problems with drug deals occuring with a teenaged boy two doors over, loud blasting music, out-of-control neighbors, inneffective homeowner's associations and parking arguments. I moved closer in since the commute was not worth the hassle.

Hello Everyone,
I moved to SHL 2/2007 my lease is ending 3/2008. Coming from Upper Marlboro and moving to SHL was a culture shock, seeing all the people who just hangout around the community store screaming nasty language for no reason at all. Strange to me. I live on 9124 Edmonston Court. For all you people who are considering moving to SHL let me just give you some issues that I delt with during my 1 year stay. I hope it helps.
1. Rude Management staff (on several occasions)
2. Dirty hallways (I shouldn't have to call to get the hallways cleaned)
3. Roaches (that I finally got under control after living there for 6 months)
4. Courts lights aren't bright enough at night.
5. Maintance leaving my door unlocked after fixing something.
6. Too many people (Thiugs, and Kids) are hanging out around the store and Carryout like it's a ZOO!!
Other than that I have had no other complaints. I think that I really lucked up with the apartment and its location that I was placed in because I have heard that ceilings were caving in and cracks were in the walls from leaks. My apartment had fresh paint, no cracks in the walls, and nice new carpet when I moved in aswell as a remodeled kitchen. I haven't witnessed any crime, (I take public transportation) but I do read the community paper that is placed in the hallway on Saturday morning. It looks like most of the crime happens in Cherrywood, and Breezwood areas. Maybe because it's a high traffic area because people have to walk to Shell, Target, ect....I have heard that AIMCO places certain people in certain sections, not sure how true that is. My building is not too noisey for the most part. I do notice that on Friday, and Saturday people do play their music kind of loud (I guess they are celebrating the end of the work week or something)which I don't really mind...they are respectful enough that you really don't hear the loud music after 10 p.m. So I guess you all are wondering why I am moving??!!! I bought a home and it will be ready to move into April 7th!!!!!!
P.S. before signing anything with SHL please make sure you do a walk through to make sure things are fixed BEFORE BEFROE BEFROE you move in. DO NOT LET THEM TALK YOU INTO MOVING IN BEFORE THEY HAVE MADE THE REPAIRS (from looking under sinks, checking to see if the balcony has a charli bar to looking for cracks in the walls ect...) Goodluck!!!!

In regards to bed bugs, good luck anywhere you go. I have managed several apts. in VA. Even business travelers are picking them up from their luggage at the airports or at the hotels. The best advise I can give you is to buy a really good mattress cover for your mattress AND boxspring. You need to get the kind that zippers shut and is made for dust mites and bed bugs. Don't get the cheap ones at Target or Walmart as they just rip. You can get them for about $50-100 each on line or at Bed Bath and Beyond. I am also keeping most of my seasonal clothing packed in plastic air tight storage crates until I need them.
