I didn't know until Friday night we had one in the bldg. where I live. The old lady who lives on the floor level came knocking on people's doors at 11pm Friday night saying "I'm looking for the maintenance man that lives in the bldg". Had no idea, maybe he didn't live here long...but when I heard another tenant tell her the apt.# he lives in, I was floored because this clown is in the same apartment where the REALLY loud music comes from...I had to call the police TWICE because his music was so damn loud!!

These issues are exactly why we need a tenants Association @ Emperian Village! Please, its coming !

I have yet to attend a tenant's meeting. I believe they are the last Thursday of every month? So is Aimco still the management company, and they're just changing the name from Sprinhill Lake to Emperian Villiage? Or is Emperian Villg the name of the management as well?

So many tenants have complained about the same thing for serveral years, just read the post. Aimco did not care at all and neither did the forever changing management staff at the apartment complex. A Tenant Association is needed and needed now! Change the name of the apartment complex and it is still a dump and poorly managed. If the organization running the apartment complex does not change than the apartments won't change!

You should have received a notice that AIMCO sold Springhill Lake to Empirian Property Management, Inc. June 30, 2008. If you did not go to the office and get one. I would really like to know if "JUSTDTRUTH4u" is a resident of this complex, past resident or just an angry individual that really loves to bad mouth everything and has a negative comment about anything about "Springhill Lake"? If the individual is a tenant, what are they doing to help resolve the numerous problems, or are they all talk and no action. Maybe they are one of the individuals that lived here a long, long time ago and now feels it should be demolished? Yes, this place has many, many problems, but it is not all bad, only certain areas. Those are the areas that need to be concentrated on and cleaned up by the new owners. I have lived here for more than 10 years, so I am painfully aware of the negatives, but I do think positive that the problems will be resolved.

I lived at SHL from Nov 1997 to Feb 2005 - a long, long time in SHL terms. I was there when the couple was killed in the parking lot as a result of road rage - I was there for several rapes, inumerable thefts, break-ins, car thefts, etc. and the only response from AIMCO was to circulate memos that basically said "lock your doors and be cautious." By the way, do they still not lock the outside doors allowing anyone to enter the buildings at all hours? No other housing units in Greenbelt - not even the Apts around the Center are so exposed. I was there in the blizzard when we had 18" of snow in the parking lots for THREE days while the residents were left to fend for themselves before I went to the Mayor's office myself to demand that they help dig us out. I was there for towings of legally parked cars because AIMCO had set the towing company on their CUSTOMERS and gave them cart blanche to tow our cars and hold them for ransom without legal recourse on the part of the residents. I was there when they informed residents who had leases which INCLUDED ELECTRICITY that in a few weeks, regardless of what your lease guarantees, you're going to have to pay for electricity. My every contact with the minions of management who presented a united front to prevent you from talking to anyone in authority, was patronizing and misleading. I can't tell you how many falsities I was told. They misrepresented the landlord/tenant laws, their previously stated policies and their actual practices. I admit that I took the stance that I was a CUSTOMER - a consumer of their product and therefore worthy of respect and honest treatment. I felt I was paying a hefty amount to live under seige. They took the attitude that I was an inmate of their gulag with all the rights and merit of a bothersome insect. Under AIMCO, tenants were not allowed a copy of their records. We were grudgingly allowed to examine them in the office (under supervision) but not allowed a copy even if we paid for it. Without access to our records, it was impossible to take issue with their policies, or make our point with civic officials. "Anonymous" is obviously of the same stripe - just another minion. I made several tentative attempts at organization of tenants at SNL (and yes, if you're one of the old guard you can probably guess who I am) but there are so many obstacles to organization that I was at a loss. SHL has a large immigrant non-English speaking population who is suspicious of authority and fearful of any political involvement. It also has a very transient population of students and others. It's also huge. It will take a core of maybe a couple of dozen committed individuals to begin to tackle this challenge. But I think that if such a group would really come together, the City would listen. A woman at my polling place at the elementary school said that only 4% of eligible voters at SHL actually voted. The City does not know how many people live there and likes to pretend that SHL really isn't a part of Greenbelt because it's such a gargantuan problem - ignoring the fact that SHL represents half or more of its population. I say all this - even after I've been gone for years and have no more stake in it, because I think the SHL property has many extraordinary assets. Not only is it supremely well located but it has wonderful housing stock from the 50's and 60's that if well-tended could be a unique show place. The actual apartments themselves are larger (by far) more interesting and more comfortable than any other apartments/condos in Greenbelt. The parkland surroundings could be charming and inviting. I loved my apartment - I really loved it. It was large (quite large, actually)comfortable and bright. I couldn't have afforded anything better in the Metro area (if such a thing existed.) It's strange that this is an apartment complex - not a town or a city - but it has the good areas of town and the bad areas. It was originally Greenbelt's premier residence - a stellar community. That was when it was managed as a COMMUNITY - not as a corporate ghetto. Only when committed residents who can spend the time and energy to invest in this wonderful place emerge will it have any chance of survival. - Not Anonymous - Jennifer Hollon
