If you are a UMD student there is not much else to take

Univ. square is O.K. It is not something I'd take if there if I have the money.
First, the plusses-
1) The locality is safe and beautiful. Visitors are usually taken to the Greenbelt lake. There are tennis courts close at hand.
2) The apartments are reasonably spacious and comfortable-but this might be debatable too (see cons)
3) The bus C2 and UMD shuttle are at the doorstep. If you don't own a car (like me) this can become very important, even with the rather infrequent shuttle and the unreliable C2.
4) The Greenbelt co-op is a five minute walk.
5) Relatively cheap.
And now the cons
The apartment staff are stupid and incompetent. One example was an court appearance notice we were given because they had lost our check and decided that we hadn't paid our rent.
Roaches (!!!): They are uncontrollable. It necessitates moving every year.
Bad infrastructure coming to light at the wrong moments:
a) The AC fails on the hottest day of the year, and is not repaired until the day after.
b) The bathroom flush fails regularly.
c) The doors lock themselves from the outside without warning causing the subject to damage doorknob to open door.
d) Plug points fail without warning. This results in tricky manoevring of wires to other outlets.
e) Heating/air conditioning is mediocre. In our big three bed unit, the distribution is non-uniform. Heating/Cooling is very inadequate in some rooms.
To summarize, this may be what a poor. university student can best expect here. The cons are severe, but one can live with them. I have to grudgingly recommend this apartment as a place to go for a univ. of MD student.

Your review is on the mark. In the entire 10 mile radius of U of M, these are about the best that you are going to get. Crime is pretty low and the grounds are well-manicured and clean. The buildings are now accessed only through a security keypad. The air-conditioning is notorious for being broken and maintenance men lug those huge old units around and try to make do but the air usually breaks again wthin a week. When I lived there, the rental office would report tenants to the Sheriff's Office for being just one day late with the rent plus post a sign on your door. Very unnerving. Parking can be a nuisance after 9PM and if you park anywhere other than striped space, they will tow immediately!
