This place is terrible! First of all, it took us months to finally get in an apartment. We looked at one and Janet, one of the girls in the office, told us that we could move in that particular apartment in a week! Then we got a call from her saying that that apartment had already been rented out. Um, shouldn't you have already known that prior to it being shown to us' So then it took her a week to find us another apartment. They didn't even show it to us because she said that "it looked exactly the same as the other one." So the day before we were supposed to move, we signed the lease and were given the keys. While we were out there, we went and looked at the place. Many, many things were wrong with it. A closet door was off in one of the bedrooms, just propped up against the wall. There was mold growing in the furnace area, there was a Star Wars sticker still stuck on the refrigerator and there was no air conditioning unit! In the middle of August! So we figured, whatever, let's just move in, this place is fantastic! Boy, were we wrong. The night of move-in day, our upstairs neighbors were having a party. We had the call the police twice that night! When we informed management, they told us to write a letter because they needed written documentation to do anything about it. We had numerous other problems with these same neighbors and were told, again by Janet, to write everything down. During our time of living there, we had written FIVE letters to the management office. Nothing changed, not one single thing. We contacted Eric from Grady Management and told him that we wanted out of our lease. He said that he could transfer us to another Grady-owned property. Why in the hell would I want to stay within the same Management company'! So, needless to say, we passed on that deal. My husband and I sat down with an attorney to see what our next plan of action was. Because three paragraphs in the lease and one Maryland law were broken by Cortland's management crew, we were given the green light to go ahead and break our lease. With the attorney's advice, I wrote a letter to the Cortland office and the Grady Management office in Silver Spring telling everyone our plans to vacate. We have not received a response. That was two months ago. Save yourself the headache and stay far away from Cortland Apartments and all other Grady Management-owned properties! Oh and want to know how long my family lasted there' TWO MONTHS! Two months and we had that many problems!!

Getting an attorney is a good idea. My family and I left Cortland in September. We couldn't afford an attorney, but we broke our lease anyway, because we were DESPERATE to get out of there! Now we "owe" them about $1500 which is ridiculous. But, anything is better than living there, so we'll deal with it. I hope things work out better for you guys! Good Luck :)

No way! You're kidding. $1500?! My Mom is actually in court right now with a couple of the girls from the office because they're saying that she owes for two months and she doesn't! So she printed out a bunch of different bills from her records and also some of these reviews to show them how everyone hates how they do business!

What lawyer did she get? I am vacated from a supposedly month to month and they are telling me a have to give a 60 day notice. Please a month to month would only require a 30 day.
