Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2007
i used this site to rule out a lot of apartments when i was looking for a place 2 move at the end of 2006. i didn't see calvert hall on here because i was looking under Landover hills, MD. i came to see an apt and thought they were average looking, but spacious & definitely in my price range. i wanted to give my review, so that it may hopefully help someone else out. i moved to calvert hall in january 2007. i have had good experiences and not so good experiences since i have moved in.
but the not so good experiences have always been resolved to my satisfaction. this may be long but hopefully it will be helpful to someone. respond if you have any questions and i'll give my honest opinion.
1. Roaches
the day i moved in, before i unpacked 1 box, there were roaches. i bombed and sprayed. but that won't work because the roaches would just go back into the cracks along the baseboards and hide. finally i called the rental office & told them that i thought the roaches were hiding in the hallow part in the back of the fridge and coming from under the front door. (which i later saw were probably coming from the apt across the hall.) the next day, they put on a door sweep. the day after that they gave me a new fridge. there seems to be a mandatory extermination about every 3-4 months. i see a roach every now and then. which i still don't like, but it could be a whole lot worse. i make sure i don't leave food out and sweep up any crumbs after cooking and eating.
2. Grounds
The grounds are nothing fancy. there's just mulch, grass, trees and bushes. there are no sidewalks, which i don't like especially since there are a lot of kids around there. one of the things that i absolutely hate is that people throw trash in ground. there are no trash cans, but people need to take pride in where they live & teach that to their kids. this is why there are so many roaches outside! people drop food and wrappers which attract roaches & water bugs. i live on the 1st floor, but they don't invade my apt. we could also use more trash dumpsters, but they would have to take up some parking spaces to put more in. i do see people cleaning the buildings and picking up the trash.
3. Electric bill
My electric bill was extremely high 1 month ($163.) i called the rental office. after they looked into it, i found out my thermostat was broken and that somehow the A/C was running. Ms. Davis talked to the property manager and the money i had to spend to pay Pepco was deducted from my rent and the thermostat was fixed.
4. Parking
the parking fills up quick. i always find a space on the lot, but it may be several buildings away. there are only about 3 visitors spots, but the residents usually park in them. so your visitors may have to park on the street. they warn you that cars will be towed overnight if they don't have a sticker. but i haven't seen a tow truck before.
5. Management & maintenance
They have been helpful to me. i have had a couple of leaks in the bathroom (sink and toilet.) which they have responded to & fixed the next day. Ms. Davis and the other ladies have always been nice. But i haven't had much dealings with Ms. Davis since i moved in. I do like that the office is open 7 days a wk.
6. Apartments & noise
the apartments are really spacious & i like the layout of the 1 bdrm. i have a queen size bedroom set in my room and still have a lot of room. the prices are decent, especially if you can't afford the high prices of other apts. they are not carpeted. you have to buy carpet or area rugs to cover 80% of the apt. i can usually hear the people upstairs walking around, because of the wood floors. there are a lot of kids in the complex. there are several small children in my building, no teenagers. so the teenagers don't hang out in front or in my building. 1 day it rained and 2 kids played in the hall 4 a little while. but i only hear them as they are coming and going. but each building is different. i don't have kids, but all kids who live in the complex can go to a free summer camp. i think the camp is run by the state's parks & recreation.
it's an okay place to start out. unless things take a turn 4 the worse, i will probably stay a while.
