Make sure you view apt. first

To put it bluntly, I will be moving out as soon as I can. While the apartments are large and maintenance seems to react quickly and effectively to most minor problems, I've had numerous other problems that have completely soured me on the place.
First, we reserved the apartment sight unseen because we were moving from far away and they looked nice from the pictures. BIG MISTAKE. The carpet looks like it's at least 10-15 years old and the apt. smells musty. When we moved in, we realized that the rooms hadn't really been cleaned, they had just painted over the dust and dirt. Our stove is probably at least 20 years old, cannot keep a constant temperature, and the numbers are almost completely worn off the oven dial. The bathroom floor looks like it's still the original (circa 1960's) and no matter how much I mop, it never looks clean. The windows are also quite old and very inefficient. They do not fit well in the window frame, are difficult to open, and let a lot of air leak in from the outside.
Second, the laundry room is horrible. There are two washers and two dryers for 10 apartments, so it can be tough to do laundry on weekends. The machines break down regularly and I've lost appx. $5-10 in a year (the laundry co. does reimburse, however). Anytime someone is doing laundry, the entire building becomes steamy and the floor gets dangerously wet with puddles in some areas. There is now mold growing on the walls of the room.
Third, the front doors are metal and very thin. When you have loud neighbors (as all mine seem to be) this can get very annoying. Many of my neighbors seem to fight often and the police have come on two separate occasions due to domestic disputes. While I realize this is a part of life, it seems to happen a little more than it should here.
Last, and maybe my biggest complaint, you pretty much have to drive everywhere. There are no grocery stores anywhere nearby or any convenience stores within close walking distance. While it looks like Giant is building a new store near the PG Plaza Metro, it probably won't be done for months and it's still roughly a mile away. All other grocery stores are at least 2-3 miles away, most not providing a very pleasant shopping experience. While PG Plaza mall is close, which is kind of nice, nothing else is.
Although not everything here is bad, the cons definitely outweigh the pros. I would rather pay more and get a nicer, newer (and cleaner) place somewhere else.
