Overall, I enjoyed my stay at Highview. I would recommend it, especially for college students. It's convenient to The Mall at Prince George's (which now has a Target), a fairly new Giant, and the PG Plaza metro station. A bus line also services the community. Both rooms in the 2 bedroom units are large, so one person won't get stuck with a really small room while the other gets a really large one.
Southern Management is really good about making arrangements for college students to occupy their units. Since we used their apartment search service, they gave us a $200 voucher to use for our deposit. There was also a $30 discount on the rent each month. They include all financial aid as income, so we didn't need co-signers.
At the beginning, we had a pretty serious roach problem. After making some changes within the apartment & having the exterminator come several times, the problem was basically eliminated.
We also had an old refrigerator. It worked fine for the first 5 or 6 months, then it started leaking on the inside and stopped keeping the food cold. We reported the problem, and the maintenance staff kept telling us that the needed part was on order. Well, after a few weeks, we still hadn't gotten the part and the food was continuing to spoil quickly. So, after yet another complaint, they provided a brand new refrigerator.
You can tell that these buildings are pretty old and have been "remodeled" a few times. I was told that our unit would have new appliances, but ours turned out to be pretty old (we should have known it wasn't going to be just like the model unit they showed us). It was okay since they all worked properly (except for the refrigerator). After a few months, a lot of old carpet stains started to re-surface, and there was nothing we could do about it. The walls are thin, so we would sometimes hear our neighbors moving around, playing music, etc. But it was nothing unbearable.
Because of the building's age, there were occassional problems with the heating and AC--there were times when we couldn't get a comfortable temperature for the whole unit; it would be too hot in one bedroom and too cold in the other.
Parking was okay, but they will only give you one permanent visitor pass per unit. You can request a temporary visitor pass when you need one, but they keep tabs on you to make sure you're not using it as a permanent parking pass. Each leaseholder gets a permanent parking sticker. Sometimes we needed extra parking and couldn't get it, so our visitors had to park on the street.
The neighborhood is pretty safe and quiet. There are quite a few kids, but they're always respectful and know when to clear the walkways and entries. The complex's street is a dead end, so there is no thru-traffic. However, some people drive much too fast for there to be so many children and other pedestrians.
The office staff were all very nice. They were always able to answer our questions and give advice on solving our rental problems.
