I've lived in Kent Village for the past 10 years. Most people come to these websites to complain but you never hear the good. I have NEVER had a roach problem in my apt. ...and I'm not the tidiest person around either. So when people talk of these mass roach infestations I'm like whoa I hope they keep them to themselves. Hahahaha.

But seriously! Come on now. Basically you get what you pay for. Low rent = lots of knuckle head kids and old drafty apartments. If you want 5-star quality go rent your 1 bedrm for $2000/month somewhere else. I admit my apt is drafty, but you can do a few lil simple things like place plastic over your windows in the winter to conserve heat or running your a/c on low at 70 degrees during the summer. In fact I only used one of my a/c units this summer to cool a 2bedrm apt. and my bill avg like $100/month. I have to admit the townhouses are difficult to cool off on the 2nd floor. Plus folks probally washing their fool heads off, which makes that elec. bill HIGH!! Anyway, maintenance is ALWAYS nice, curteous, and attentive. I remember I called once because I couldn't remember if I had turned my iron off. they went right over a checked without a problem. I guess it really is true that you have to give respect in order to get respect. Hmmmm...

As for the management office... I'm wondering why there is so much contact with the management office'' I RARELY need to interact with the management office, other than to drop off my rent or pick up a ticket to some activity they are sponsoring. So I'm wondering if management is so bad because rent is not being paid on time!! Hmmmmm

I admit over the past 10 years I've had some problems, but there are good things going on at Kent village too.

Like the after school program they have. My child is to old to go now, but it was a brand new facility with lots of computers and activities.

Yes the BRAND NEW playgrounds are surrounded by fences. They are accessible during the day and protected from vandals in the evening.

The grounds are upkeep very nicely and my building is cleaned daily. the dumpsters are emptied regularly, they even dispose of stuff I know they aren't required to dispose of like furniture left by folks who move and don't give a hoot.

It's close to 2 metro stations.

a recreation center is next door.

I've never seen dumpsters on fire in the 10 years I've been there. And the laundry facilities are nice. with an adequate qty. of machines, and room for folding. teenagers don't hang out in there because they are locked!! Unless someone doesn't take time to close the door when they leave.

Basically I think the community is well taken care of. Not everything is going to be perfect. Anywhere you go problems arise over time.

Instead of bashing the place why not come together and make it better!! If this is all you can afford, make it work for you.

I'm glad your ten years has been good but make no mistake majority of the people on here complain because their experiences were horrible. The rent is cheap because the apartments are old as hell! I don't acre about the kids but the apartments should be safe and clean. No womder they give you warning about mold when you move in because of the many complaints to the Health Department. I just moved in and moved back out because yes the roaches where that bad. All in the hallways, and I bleached and bombed before I moved in twice! When I told the rental office why I was moving out, one of their staff acknowledged the roach problem. You can be as clean as can be but once they get into the wallls and under the carpet they are there to stay! Southern Management makes money hand over fist to not upgrade those apartments. They have lots of apartments they upgrade and make nice but ones like Capital Views, Oxon Village, and Carriage Hill are just as bad. Parking is the worst and I am wrong expect an apartment to be free from holes and open cracks and crevices? Not to knock you but u are better than most to have lived in an apartment let alone KV for ten years cuz renting is throwing away your money. If I'm rent while trying to buy atleast let my place be clean and not ran over with roaches!

In light of what you are commenting to, it also depends on where exactly you are located. I have called my cul-de-sac the land of grease & water. I have literally looked out of two different windows (at different times) and seen one building on fire from the bottom level & one go up on the top level. I have been here since '05, coming from (formally) Forest Creek, and prior to that Alex., Va which is like going from a pent-house to the basement. I was moved (by force) out of F.C. when the 2nd time in 2wknds my apt. was broken into, this time when the purp. cut my balcony window out with a box cutter, F.C. left ply wood in its place for 3-4 days. Upon breaking my lease, I found K.V. with the help of Thomas Thompson's office, and to this day I still thank Lisa McCoy for her assistance, however this before & after care program you speak of (don't know where, my 9 yr old & I walk to Paca Elementary {Google it-by foot} because Columbia Park has no b4&aftercare, & I don't drive, and all of the home care providers are "full"-of it) must have been a lack of interest since 2 teenagers broke into my T.H. during a beautiful weekday morning. Took them to court...and well, it's going on a year & not a penny for the verdict in my favor... because the county of PG can not enforce payment to a minor, however, if these minors (as I am a parent of one as well) found (not can/find.. even I found a church that has activities in the summer for those that can not afford camp & are too young to work) somewhere to be, I wouldn???t be out of a brand new $400 foot stool & constant reminders from the soda they entertained themselves with by pouring all over the carpet, that KV still has not done anything about. I just knew that was what the security deposit was for. Most places deduct costs from your security deposit (what is for) at the time of need, not when you are ready to move out & see what you can get back from it. I just spent time on the phone (not even 10 minutes ago) with Miss Shirley from the maintenance department who (tried) to tell me that no one was in my apt for the reasons I was calling for, however when I come home to find my smoke detector on my dining room table, it's hard for me to convince her that "no one" was in my t.h. for those such reasons. However, it takes the movement of me going to that sad volunteer Fire Station for KV & tell them, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind providing a smoke detector so I won???t be on tv embarrassed when Channel 4 News (who I call on) comes to my house after displacing my entire cul-de-sac because my smoke detector was removed. The playgrounds are new & nice, but the one that my son is allowed to go to on his own is locked at times (talking the weekend here) and I came looking for him & he had climbed under the gate because I just knew it would be open on a Saturday. My job is over a metro, that is close, but when you have to wait 20min for a bus that if you miss, the other train station you speak of is not Addison Rd (which is the opposite way of the A12/Capital Plaza Mall. Who can miss one bus, then say, well I can go to the other Metro, Cheverly...which is out of the way and not of walking distance. My family is from Harlem, NY & I grew up in NE (I'm talking Trinidad, Edgewood Ter. & went to church off of Kennedy St, NW WDC); I have never seen a dumpster burned period, so I'm not sure where that is something mentioned often in the news. I have friend's visit & each (including a guy I was seeing) had their car broken into. I can honestly say that we as a community need to come together, but I can not always voice my opinion in such a public meaning. I travel by public transportation & when trying to make a meeting that starts 1/2hr before my son's school's mtg, or trying to make up time, doesn't always allow me to attend those tenants mtg that are imperative to me as well. I will say that with the addition to the huge a/c unit that has taken a month to install is an eye soar & I would've passed upon complex searching, but glad to know that after 10 yrs, you are still impressed.

You must be kidding. Your post reads like an advertisement. My rent is paid no later than the fifth of every month. I contact management whenever needed because I do pay on time and expect to be treated like a valued customer. There are no "knuckle-head" children in my section. Only children who are left with nowhere to play because the playgroud is locked during the hours when children are supposed to be able to use it. I really wonder if you are a renter. Plastic at the windows?? The last time I can remember people having at their windows, they also had an outhouse. If you live in a 2 bedroom apartment, how do you know what it costs to heat a townhome? My townhouse was roach infested when I moved her. Thank God the problem moved out and my remainig "clean" neighbors went on a boric acid spree and dehydrated the little pests to death.

I honestly beleive that is a task of the staff to leave their own ratings. Why not use that time to improve your community? Tisk that's what happens when certain people are left in charge.
