oh the nostalgia

I grew up in this complex during the late 80's and early 90's, before Southern Management started cleaning the place up. Considering what they were working with, I think Southern Management did a great job. Even today, when I'm looking for new places to live, I always look into Southern Management properties first.
With that said, there used to be a lot of shootings at this complex. When I was a kid, I would ask my sister about it, and she would tell me they were fire-crackers. I used to see Kent Village on the evening News all the time because of some drug related violence. My parents were part of a large wave of Korean immigrants that moved into the community during the 70's and 80's due to the low rent housing. They're all gone now as far as I know.
There used to be an open-air drug market, but from my recent visits, I don't see that anymore. I think they've all went into hiding, just like the dealers in DC. Apparently, street corner dealing is the stuff of New York and Baltimore. In any case, I'm an investigator now for a private firm, so I find myself traversing this area every now and then, not due to criminal issues, but just because I have work in the area.
This is what I've learned about crime over the years. Generally speaking, if you keep to yourself and don't get involved in drugs, the chances of you being a victim of violence are very slim.
Just don't sleep near the windows and don't walk around too much at night.
Stay safe Kent Village residents. This community made me who I am today, drug dealers and all.
