Getting better under new mgmt, but...
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 4/2/2007
Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2007
When I first moved to Laurel Square, the price of the apts is what got me (not anymore though, after my first year, my rent was jacked up significantly). It was far cheaper than anywhere else. However, it didn't take long for me to figure out why. Weeks after I had done a walkthru for my move-in, I had doors without doorknobs, electrical outlets without covers, windows without blinds and a pest problem among many, many other maintenance problems. It took months, several nasty phone calls to the maintenance office, the front office, the RIMSI property management and a formal letter of complaint to get all that stuff fixed. And the staff in the front office...unbelievably rude.
New mgmt recently took over, and the office staff SEEMS to be more professional, but the maintenance dept is still seriously lacking. When my washer flooded my kitchen a few months ago, it took over an hour for EMERGENCY staff to show up, and then they basically told me that bc it was my washer and not a burst pipe or something, that they couldn't help. He didn't even bring anything to clean the water up with or dry the carpets, and I was stuck using my own towels (which I afterward couldn't wash bc the washer was broken) to clean up the mess, which took almost all night, and I had to set a fan near the carpets to dry them out myself. This was about 3 months ago. A couple weeks ago I found a note from maintenace saying that they got my request for an industrial fan to dry the carpets and to replace the washer, but it was already done (yeah, only bc I called everyday for 2 weeks to get it fixed in a timely manner).
On a positive note, the apartments are big and come with a washer and dryer, and even though my rent was increased SIGNIFICANTLY after my first year, its still not a BAD price for an apt. But residents under the new mgmt are now responsible for paying utilities that were previously covered by rent, so I won't be staying another year, that's for sure.
So if you're a maintenance man, this place is great. You should move here post haste. PLEASE. If you're not really into fixing things yourself or are impatient about things being fixed in your apt, then I don't recommend it. If you do move here, be sure to ask what the market value is of your apt after your first year, bc they will get you with a great price for the apt and then increase it dramatically after the first year.
