Adequate in a Tight Market

I'm really not sure what this rant is all about, but I've lived here for a couple of months now and I must say that I'm relatively happy with my choice. I chose Spyglass over other places in part because of price and in part because it is a relatively quiet and safe, out-of-the-way neighborhood. I'm going to be completely honest about my experience and let you all make your own decisions about whether this is a nice place to live or not.

General:

Pros:

- The noise level from the base is hardly noticable at all. Unless planes fly DIRECTLY overhead, you can hardly hear anything. I'm a light sleeper myself, and I've never had a problem being woken up in the middle of the night. Unless you have a night job and sleep during the day, this shouldn't be a big problem.

- Place is well insulated and well built, and even in 100 temps I've never had a problem with cooling, and likely won't with heating either. The pumps are new and work great. My first electric bill was still under $100, too.

- Maintenance has always been extremely nice, and even helped me out with fixing my own desk. Both Joe and Mark are awesome. Office staff is pretty nice, too, although they've gotten nicer now that they have extra shift coverage and have even expanded their office hours to include sundays, too.

Cons:

- I use a cell phone instead of a hard line, which is not something I'd recommend at this building. Maybe it's because it's too close to the base, but I've heard several other places farther away from the base have that problem too. Not sure. Get a hard line.

- The apartments are a bit old, though sturdy enough. If you like gas stoves and ovens, this is not a place for you. The paint is well-layered and slightly uneven, although the place is well kept considering it's 20 years old. The carpets were not new when I moved in and it's getting to be about time for a renovation, though.

- YES, bugs are a problem. They'll swarm by your door at night in the summertime because of the light by the door, but if you don't go out too much after dark, it's not a big problem. Not really a lot of noise, but DEET is definitely a must when walking out anywhere past your front door.

- They'll tell you parking isn't a problem until one day you find yourself coming in after 8 or 9 pm and you'll find no spots anywhere next to your building because they're all taken. Usually there are still a few spots around the corner, but I think it's just recently gotten worse. Just don't plan on getting home late, if you can help it.

- The private beach access is a bit overrated. Unless you don't mind swimming in water that's rocky and where all the fish will nibble at your knees, it's not too bad. It's jelly-fish season starting around mid- to late-august through september, though. And the pool is only 5 foot deep. But, I'm sure there's clubs with pools you can join if you want to, and the beaches on base are MUCH nicer, if you have access.

I did some shopping around before making my decision, and compared to 75% of the apartments everywhere else, this place is a dream. It's reasonably priced for the area, and if you want any better you'll be paying at least $200 more a month. The Greens, The Mayfaire, and Wildewood are the only other places I'd recommend checking out if you want a "nice" apartment, but they're much more expensive.

You get what you pay for, and for the money this place really isn't bad. There are worse, but there are fewer in the market that are better. I'd say thumbs up. Go for it.
