When something goes wrong...

For the most part, we enjoyed living at The Grand until something went horribly wrong. We still cannot believe management's reaction or response. The pros: the complex is near the Metro, has a decent gym for an apt complex and is close to shopping, etc. The complex is expensive for what you receive and not the most up-to-date.
We are sure management will respond, stating otherwise, but our story starts 3 days before Christmas when we came home from work to find our apt completely flooded, granted, from no direct fault of The Grand (pipe burst), but what happened following has been quite frustrating. The staff illegally went into our personal property to obtain our Williams-Sonoma bowls (received as wedding gift 3 months earlier) to collect, dirty, brown water that came through 2 floors above. They did offer alternate place to stay for one night. We lost time and pay from work to take off and clean up. Less than 12 hours after the flood, they were "repairing" the ceiling before allowing it to properly dry. Areas where it came through recessed lighting were never repaired. We came back from Christmas out-of-state, to find our indoor furniture had been placed and left outside in the rain x 5 days. There was drywall dust everywhere and they had thrown everything from our closet into our bathroom, piled halfway to the ceiling, and we were not able to reach our tub, toilet, or sink. They had damaged our computer table which was leaning on its side and had not told us and still have not apologized or offered to replace. Due to health concerns (mold, etc) and the conditions, we immediately searched for a new apt and had to stay in hotel overnight (which they refuse to reimburse us for). They agreed to let us out of our lease due to health concerns and we signed a new lease the next day. As we were not prepared to move and had nothing packed, etc, we slept on an air mattress in the new apt and packed until the early morning hours each night after work for the next week. Meanwhile, they have charged us rent and parking for those days we were forced to find alternative housing. They will not return half the amenities fee which was paid in full for one year even though we were forced to move (through no fault of our own) after 6 months. Through loss of time from work, property damaged (mostly incurred from their staff and not the flood), moving expenses, etc, this incident has cost us thousands of dollars. Our deposit was not returned until we wrote to them and they have completely ignored simple requests to reimburse hotel expenses, not charge rent/parking from time forced to find alternative housing, or replace computer table, bowls, etc. they damaged. The Grand is an okay place to live until you have a problem.
