I would like to file a complaint against the leasing office at the Grand located in Bethesda, md. My girlfriend applied to the apartments in early December and got an approval letter for an one bedroom apartment.
Tiffany was the leasing agent and Mary Ellis is the manager. Tiffany accepted the deposit to put a hold on Apt 503, but she gave it away to someone else. Then she offered to give her apt 633 as replacement for move in date of February 15th, but my girlfriend told Her earlier that she needed to move in January 31st. Then, we set an appointment for 4 pm today with Tiffany today but she left at 3 pm according to a co- worker. My girlfriend spoke to her at 2 pm. We left work early and came with our agent and she just left . I can't help to feel that my girlfriend is being disrespected and discriminated against. I will definitely file a complaint with the dept of equal housing. The management at the Grand are not what you would expect from an upscale apartment such as the grand. Tiffany was very self center and arrogant, and they certainly discriminate against people that they don't want to rent to. They don't reject you based on your credit, race or personal income, because it's illegal. Instead, they refuse to return your phone calls, and don't show up for appointments. Mary Ellis is a terrible manager and she actually condones the unprofessional behavior displayed by her staff. We filed a complaint to the department of equal housing, but was dismissed since it was our word versus hers. The investigator said that unprofessional staff is not grounds for discrimination. We ended up renting at the Fenestra apartments and got a two bedroom apartment for $1910 a month with free parking. The apartment was brand new and had amenities like hard wood floors, granite counter tops, and stainless steel appliances. Most importantly, they had helpful staff that respects their customers.

Interesting...you had an appointment on Sunday 8/9 with Tiffany, however neither Tiffany or Mary Alice have worked at the grand in several months? How you managed to pull that one off is a feat in and of itself. True, some of the remaining staff at the grand could use a little work attitude wise - however the apartments and building are outstanding and several of the staff members are some of the most pleasant people I have dealt with. Get a clue.

Anonymous is anonymous because she or he works at the Grand. Actually, consider yourself lucky that you were stonewalled and moved in somewhere else. The male staff walk in on naked ladies in the locker room. Often. They walk into your apt. whenever. I had to stay dressed from 9-5 in case they walked in on me (in my own apt.). I don't know what race you are but I know they discriminate against whites (at least in moderate income housing). They rented my apt. to someone else 2 months before my lease was up and I didn't say I was leaving. I had to. The staff goes over to the bar at the Marriott and gets drunk together, happy hour and office hours. They keep track of who is out of town and use their apt. for out of towner family members. One employee told me that Marguerite had her sister come from Africa to have her baby in a tenant's apt. so the baby would be a US Citizen. And when I mentioned to a police officer recently that I used to live at the Grand she said, "That's the hood!" The Grand management said they didn't renew my lease because, "nobody turns in other tenants that are doing drugs." So consider yourself lucky. Oh and the nannies give the kids bathes in the pool. At least that's what the kids in the locker room told me. When I was running away from a roach. I was in my friend's apt when he wasn't home. And management was supposed to come in to change the filter. They didn't know I was in the bathroom. They were rummaging in his drawers in the kitchen, and didn't change the filter. ....

The response from the Staff at The Grand dated 8/10/09 is a prime example of getting a clue as to the treatment of future and current residents. The complaint was written 8/10/09 regarding an incident in Feb 2009. There are Federal Fair Housing Laws the manager must adhere to and the State of Maryland and the Federal Fair Housing authority will send secret shoppers to evaluate the staff.
In addition, all current residents must be treated equaly that means proper notification for lease renewals, proper notices to enter units, and abaide by the lease agreement.
No one should be entering your apartment without the proper notification, as per signed lease agreement, unless it is an emergency. If you feel that your rights were violated or employees are drunk at work, this is not the right place to complain. Call the police and make a police report if you suspect your unit was used while out of town and have the investigators check key-track to see who entered your unit.

I wanted to rent an apt in the Grand and I found the staff very snooty as if they considered themselves royalty. They didn't seem to know when apts were available and I had to wait quite a long time even though I had an appt. I would never go back there again.
