No As bad as people make it out to be, but...

I've lived here for about 2 years now, and I have mixed feelings
First off I moved here from another state where renters are treated really bad. Imagine a complex with no central air for the units, appliances for 1958 when the place was built, the front office extorting money from potential renters, etc. Comparatively, Shelter cove is hevean!
The good: I've seen alot of complexes in the area and this place is better than anything in Glen Burnie (duh, now that I've lived here) and affordable complared to Annopolis complexes. Grounds are basically well kept, I see people early in the morning picking up trash, lawns are kept nicely, flowers planted and tended. New owners continue to add to the grounds with improved lighting, painting, some rehabilitation and so on. There are community events 2 or 3 times a year. Front office is friendly enough if not always the most responsive of people. All the public facilities are fairly well maintained and clean.
Maintainance falls in two categories, either they fix it right away or not at all, no middle ground. Basic repairs such as the toilet, water heater, dishwasher have been responded to the same or next day. When I reported my tolet was loose I got the tolet fixed and the flooring replaced in my bathroom and kitchen without asking. Things such as tub reglazing, squeeky floors, bad cabinet doors, etc. are basically ignored. They are in the process of renovating all the units as people move out with new kitchens and baths, the unrenovated units are in ruff shape and they will do nothing about it.
The units are wood framed, so noise, smoke and smells travel pretty freely. Your neighbors can be questionable. A large number of 2 and 3 bedroom units means many children, in a rental complex. I let you decide if that's good or bad. There have been 2 half-hearted breakin attempts at my unit when I was away for the weekend, neither made it past the heavy metel door and deadbolt. I have found most residences to be somewhat unfriendly, stand-off-ish. This is a place to sleep, no doubt. Expect thobbing base from a passing car subwoffer at least 2-3 times a night (single glazed windows let in alot of sound) Pet owners tend not to clean up after their pets, watch your step. Expect door dings from other cars, and occationally someone in your assigned parking spot. Unassigned parking can be an issue later at night, you may need to park some disatance from your unit if you have a second car.
Area is unremarkable, not nearly as nice as Columbia, and pretty much everything is a drive away. Before deciding to live here drive beyond the complex itself and into the shopping area by the circle. It's not a pretty area, decide if that matters to you.
The area itself is on a upswing, lots expensive housing going into the area.
Personally, I wish I had looked in Columbia, but it's tuff looking for a new place and didn't realize the commute to the sirport would be about the same for me. Meanwhile I'm likely moving to the Federal Hill District of Baltimore to be in a more urban setting, and surprisingly the drive is about the same to my airport office complex as it now.
