Location is Important, I Guess

First off, I will start by saying that I am not a leasing agent, or a manager, nor do I have anything to do with the apartment owners. I am a tenant. Everyone that is complaining on here is living in the part of Morningside Heights that you can see from Rte 140. Anyone with half a brain can tell that the area around there is pretty crappy. It is very old, and from what I hear, that is where the Section 8 tenants are. You can also tell by the price of the apartments that you are getting yourself in trouble. The 2 bedrooms in that area are 800 something, which if you shop around, is extremely cheap.
If you drive back a little further, you will see the nice side of Morningside Heights. Where the buildings and grounds are well taken care of, most people have nicer vehicles, and the apartments are about $200 more a month. What you get for $200 is definitely worth it. I live on Mid Pines Ct. My apartment is spectacular.
I have a 2 bedroom 2 bath that is almost 1100 sq ft. The kitchen is very large for an apartment and has all newer appliances(about 2-4 years old) that are well taken care of. I have a washer/dryer in the apartment(not a huge one, but it's better than having to share with a bunch of dirty people. Every apartment has a security system, which is a nice feature just for peace of mind due to the hoodlums in the Section 8 area. Everything in the apartment is fairly new, including the bathrooms. We also have some neat looking light fixtures throughout that all match.
If I ever have a problem, maintenance is there to fix it. The only time that it takes them more than a day or two to come out is when I forget to put my dog away. My favorite thing about this place which I have never experienced anywhere else, is that the maintenance department will call me a day after the work has been completed to make sure that the work was completed to my approval.
As far as parking goes, in this area, it isn't too bad. I never have to park on the street, and there is no assigned parking.
Overall, you just need to shop around, but if you do come to Morningside Heights, make sure you go for the nice apartments at the back of the development. Maybe they just like to take care of those better since the people who live there pay more.

What are you smoking? It's hoodlums living everywhere in these apartments. It's bad in the front, back, and the middle. Don't be fooled by how nice the building looks or how well the interior look crime is everywhere. Do you watch the news or read the police blotters?

You just haven't lived here long enough. I would like to hear your comments in about a year. I have lived here 10 months and I am already moving. There are two things I like about Morningside Heights: 1.my apartment which I wish I could take with me when I leave and 2. the fact that I am 1 mile from work. The first month here someone tried to break into my daughters car and also tore off the her sideview mirror. A friend of hers from out of state had his car keyed. You have a sheet of ice on the sidewalks all winter long. But if you go down to the rental office you can see their parking lots and sidewalks were cleared. You have kids standing up on the Mid Pines Ct. parking lot throwing rocks at the cars parked in the Twin Willow Ct. parking lot. And forget about finding a parking space after 5 or 6 o'clock unless you think you are special and park in the fire zone by the dumpster all night. My daughter had her car blocked in by another car parked right in front of hers. Neighbors not cleaning up after their dogs. Don't think your special just beause you have a security system (that doesn't even connect to the police or fire department) because the Section 8 people have the same system. Then you have a fatal shooting right down by the rental office. Helicopters hovering over head at least once a month looking for someone. And you don't get to pick what apartment you want you were just lucky. When I first signed my least I was on Mid Pines Ct. but since I wanted on the second floor instead of the first floor they put me on Twin Willow Ct. Not only do you have to pay rent you have to pay gas, water and sewage. I'll drive the extra 25 minutes to work, because location isn't everything.

I agree with the two anonymous comments. I have lived in THREE different Morningside apts, as well as three different Home Properties complexes.
The first was nice, but that was back in 1999, though the people next door grew weed on their balcony and yes, it faced Reisterstown Road, and everyone made a point to get to my building so they could fall out, stoned, on the front lawn, police officers included! The staff is also pitiful and horrible. An old lady neighbor of mine, had her apartment burned. So they put her out and gave her a new place, but the keys never worked. She was locked out one day, asked me for help, so I called the Maint. Crew. The Maint. man literally stood OUTSIDE BY HIS TRUCK ACROSS THE STREET, looking at me in my face and the old lady as we stood on my balcony. He said he wouldn't fix her lock because the top one was already off, so she could make it in somehow.. mind you she had medication to take... wait, it gets better. The 2nd apt, I had an ongoing fight with my neighbors about the "assigned parking" because the apt that I rented hadn't been rented in over a year, so they took leisure to use the space whenever, making me without a PARKING SPACE!!.. oh wait, there's more! After living there for about 2 years, I moved out. I came back to the complexabout 4 years later, as the other have stated, due to the pricing, and in my opinion, it was still a great price for the oversized apt BUT I forgot where I was ilving. Not to mention Owings Mills has become extra nasty over the past 10 years. Section 8 GALORE! My 3rd and final apt, oh this was a winner! I had people pee on my patio (I had a basement apt); the guy upstairs cut my cable cords everytime I had to ask his noisy kids to be quiet and polite; people on the 2nd & 3rd floors would drop their trash over THEIR balconies, letting it land wherever, which was usually in front of my windows; the windows and balcony doors leaked profusely EVERYTIME IS RAINED; when the seasons became warm, my entire carpet was peppered with flying ants and mosquitoes - when I complained about all of this, they sent a Maint man to REPAINT MY APT!! What!?!? I said the place leaked!!! Oh and it gets better! The non-school going teenagers burned up the carpeted stairs, oh and because I had a basement apt that faced the back of the complex, the neighbor teens took it amongst themselves to HAVE SEX ON MY DOORSTEP AND HAD THE NERVE NOT TO MOVE WHEN I TRIED TO GET INTO MY APT!!! Oh and a little FYI - most of the leasing agents don't even LIVE in Morningside.. be sure to ask them why!
I have since lived in THREE other Home Properties complexes. What a waste, this has been FIVE YEARS of wasted rent and nothing but headaches. And the $50 raise in rent, ha, you were lucky. How about over $100 OF RAISED RENT!! Thank you Home Properties - and what did I get in return? A stupid survey from the NY Corporate office - PLEASE!

Ok, it has been 3 more months, and I'm still satisfied. I do see that people don't pick up after their dogs, which is annoying, but not a problem with the complex, just the dirty people who don't care about their surroundings. I have had my air conditioning break twice, and both times they came the next day to fix it. I wish they would replace the thing, but I can't expect them to do that. The leasing office staff have always been nice to me. Granted, I have never paid rent late, and I don't call them up complaining about things that they have no control over.
As for the crime, yes, I watch the news. And yes that boy was shot right by the leasing office in the ghetto townhouses. I have had no problems back on Mid Pines.
As for parking on Mid Pines, I have no idea what you're talking about. I have always been able to park in a spot. I do see that there is a small lot right in front of the smallest building on the street, but there are other spots unless you are too lazy to walk an extra 10 ft.

I have lived here for almost a year and I'm ready to go. The townhouses are nice "not getto" and the young man that got shot was a police officers son! My only complant is that they replaced my front door rather than fix the balcony that is falling apart. The neighbors are nice and while I cant understand why the people that live across the street insist on parking in front of my TH the rest is irrelivant. I'm moving to get my kids out of Baltimore, not "the heights"

I agree. The townhouses are not ghetto and the teenager that was shot was killed comming home from those upgraded apartments a few feet away from his home not by the leasing center. The neighborhood is not safe and can you believe no one saw or heard anything at 7 O'clock in the evening? People need to come together for a better and safer community perhaps start a block watch. If this can happen to a police's son in front of where he lives.... this can happen to anyone. Oh and by the way if anyone have any information about this crime please contact Baltimore County Homicide department. You can remain anonymous and there is a reward.
