very few problems, signing for a second year
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 9/20/2007
Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2007
I moved here in Nov '06, and have had very few problems.
Apartments: My apartment is the perfect size for me. I can sometimes hear the person who lives above, but only the littlest squeaking or water running. I don't hear the tv or voices. And, realistically, in any house I've ever lived in, you could hear people on the floor above, so this is not a problem. I've noticed my next door neighbor having parties while walking by, but once inside, I didn't hear anything.
Security: never had a problem (knock on wood). There are several people who live near me who drive cop cars, which makes me feel better.
Aesthetics and maintenance: Area always looks nice. Only had a few things that I needed maintenance for (once my washing machine decided it wanted to remain full of water, my hot water heater needed to be encouraged to last longer, and I once had water dripping from a vent, fortunately just into my bathtub). Avalon has a deal where they always respond within 24 hours, and if it's an emergency, they'll send someone over as soon as possible. The hot water issue fell through the cracks, and when I reminded them about it, they not only came to fix it, but gave me some $$ back on my rent.
Pests: you'll get some earwigs, moths, flies, silverfish, but very few. Granted, before this I was living in NC, where we had roaches the size of volleyballs, so I'm easily impressed. But the bugs are few, and I think I probably get more because I don't keep the AC on as much as other people (oh, and in general, the apartments don't get too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter - my bills are never outrageous).
Facilities: Gym is great (each cardio machine has it's own tv), lots of weight machines, and I like the pool. I know people enjoy the tennis courts.
People: People don't always say hi to you, but that's not a big deal. People in the main office are nice, although if you are receiving a package, don't wait to get the slip to tell you it's there - go and bug them about it.
Commute: There is a ride-on bus every half hour to go to Shady Grove, so not bad.
Value: expensive, like all of Rockville. But my new lease is only about 5% above last years, which is less than the lease went up for new renters, so it shows that they encourage you to stay long term.
In general, I'm really happy here, and I'm glad to be staying one more year. I definitely recommend it, especially for pet owners - it's great to see people out walking their dogs - they'll always say hi :)
