I spite of many of the poors reviews of the Alexander House posted on websites like these, my experience there so far has been very nice. My apartment has never had any infestation problems of any kind, and, compared to most of the other apartments available in Silver Spring, is quite nice. It has it's own dishwasher, washer and dryer, and heating and air conditioning. I have not experienced any noise problems whatsoever, and I was lucky enough to be gone during the only fire alarm since I moved in in December. The rent is right, the location is PERFECT (especially if you have a metro commute to work), the view is awesome (I can see the Capitol and the Washington Monument from my balcony), and staff have been quite nice and curteous to me. The pool is small, but never crowded. The fitness center, however, is one weak point for me. Two treadmills and one eliptical may not be enough for a 17 floor high rise apartment building. Despite this, I have only had problems 2 or 3 times because there were too many people down there. The parking costs 130 or something, but the garage 20 feet away only charges 85 a month. If you're looking for a nice place in a great location, this is probably it.

Lived here?

I was told by Management that this is a "low income" building and that I made too much money to live here (at 40k???) Am I being lead astray? How much should I expect to pay for a 2 bedroom??
From: prestonm2003 Date: 07/28/2008
The building has two options for payment, the low income version and the regular income version. The rooms are identical (in fact literally the same room could be rent to one person at the low income rate, and then another at the regular rate in consecutive leases) the only difference is that if you make under 37,500 (or something like that) for a one bedroom and 44,000 (or something like that) for a two bedroom, the rent is significantly lower. Remember that this is a combined income of all occupants, so if you were leasing a 2 bedroom and you make 40,000 and your roommate makes 40,000 you're way over the 44,000 limit. Another catch is that these buildings, in order to get money from local government which sponsors these low rate programs, have to have a certain percentage of occupancy that falls into the low-income category. So it is possible that while there are open rooms, they can only rent to low-income rentors for the time being, until they are in compliance with the government standard; then they can start leasing to the general public again. I know it can be confusing, it took me a while to start getting straight answers from some apartments as well. Finally, I think a 2 bedroom would cost around 1600 (maybe 1200-1300 if you're low income?)I have a low income 1 bedroom, and it's 1050 if that helps. Good luck!

I just called the complex. It depends on how many people will be in the household. with 3 people a two bedroom max income is 53,000.

This was a complete overreaction on my part. The HVAC system here is just fine (great compared to other apts I've been in).
