Be careful with the leasing office

I agree with other reviewers who have said to make sure you deal with Doug. If you go in and your agent is Robert, leave. After Doug had asked me to renew and my apartment got let out to someone else over the weekend, I wound up in the clutches of Robert. They did manage to find me another unit to move to, but on the day I was to sign the lease, Robert announced in the middle of my re-application that he needed to inspect my current apartment. Fine.

I told him it was going to be far messier than usual as my roommate and I are both packing to move out within a week. When he got in, my roommate is in the shower. I showed him the piles of boxes and stuff laid everywhere to be sorted. He sniffed at this, but said he understood. He then looked in the kitchen, where we had two bowls on the counter with spoons in them, a dishrack full of clean dishes, and two pots in the sink from the night before. Our small kitchen trash was half-full. He proclaimed it filthy and said that it was attracting pests and that he'd have to talk to the manager about whether they could grant my transfer.

That afternoon, I got a call saying that they would grant it, but that I could only get a six month lease, there would be a $100/mo surcharge (when the 6-month surcharge had been $50/mo the week before...) and that FC reserved the right to make 3 random inspections over the period of the lease to "make sure you're keeping up on your housekeeping."

My roommate, not knowing about the visit, did the dishes right after she got out of the shower.

Doug is willing to do a re-inspection tomorrow and see if I can re-negotiate my lease. I told him I won't sign the current one. Everyone I've talked to thinks this is all retaliation for my pressing on them after they let out my apartment.

Doug is a great guy, Dawn the manager is competent, but Robert is awful and I am writing a letter to Home Properties corporate to let them know what an awful representative of their company he is.
