Ah the sweet smell of dog sh#%....actually, it's not that bad of a place...

Years at this apartment: 2009 - 2009
I've lived here for about six months. I would summarize the pros and cons as follows:
Pros:
Location: 5 to 8 minute walk to Silver Spring Metro station. 10-12 minute walk to downtown Silver Spring. 10 minutes or less to the grocery store, drug stores, coffee shops.
Allows dogs: That may be the main reason to live here. There are very few apartments in this area that allow dogs, particularly large dogs. If you have a large dog and want to be close to the Metro, chances are that you will have to live here. It's also a suitable area to walk dogs because it's a large, wooded property with lots of grass.
Value: This is a tough one, because relative to a normal market, these places are expensive for what they are. But considering the going rate for apartments in this area, especially walking distance to Metro, the price is reasonable for the amount of space and convenience factor. Newer, more luxurious apartments in this same vicinity will run you at least $250-$500 more per month for a unit of the same size. Of course, you'll have a much nicer apartment and higher class neigbors!
Staff and Maintenance: The apartment staff are very helpful and professional. I've never had a problem with them. Things are old, but the maintenance people respond to requests quickly.
Cons:
Construction/age of units: This place was built in the 1940's. In some ways, there's a certain charm to the apartments. Many have hardwood floors and you feel like you are living in an old house. But the drawback is that the place has been repainted inside about 100 times (in a sloppy manner), the fixtures are old, the bathrooms and kitchens are tiny, and there is grossly inadequate closet space.
Parking: Like most of this area, parking is a problem. If you come home after 5 p.m., finding a parking space will be nearly impossible. It's okay on weekends. And you can rent a reserved space for about $70 a month.
Dogs: Yes, this is a positive if you have a dog. But whether you do or not, living in a complex with so many dogs can also be a drawback. I've had some problems with a neighbor whose dog barks at every move people make and every sound -- it gets old. Also, there is dog crap all over. Even when you don't see it, you can smell it.
Some of the residents: There is a mix of people living here, as one would expect for a moderately priced (for this area) apartment complex. There are some residents that look like upstanding citizens and then there are some lower class folks who sit out on the steps and smoke, leave their junk mail on the stairs (because they're too lazy to throw it out), and various folks who look like they are on the fringes of society. It's not a slum by any means, but it's also not the group you would see in a luxury apartment. For the most part, the beautiful people don't live here.
Laundry: Most units lack washer/dryer connections. There are laundy facilities but they are not pleasant, there's no place to sit, they are somewhat dirty, and often many of the machines are broken.
Overall: If you have a large dog, I would recommend this place with reservations. If you don't have a dog, you can find a nicer place than this nearby for not all that much more.
