You Pay for What You Get...

Hampton Hollow is a good community overall, but you pay for it in spades. I may end up having to move because of the cost but would love to be able to stay.
Pros:
- Safety: I'm a SWF who feels perfectly safe walking from her car to her apartment when I get home late. There might be a guy out walking his dog, but that's the extent of the "danger" here. I frequently walk/run in the neighborhood outside the complex (Aston Manor Dr) and feel safe in daylight hours.
- Service: Never had a problem with service. Office holds packages for you and staff are very friendly and professional, in my experience. I give them no trouble, and they give me no trouble.
- Parking: Ample space. Well-lit and fairly well maintained.
- Quality: Clean carpets, fresh paint, brand new electric appliances, W/D in unit.
- Convenience: Near 29 and 95 interchanges. Shopping center close to 29 is safe in daytime, and there's a farmer's market nearby. Close to police auxiliary and fire dept, and Metro/Ride-on bus stops plentiful nearby.
Cons:
- BGE Bill: People aren't kidding. The winter electric bills were literally $250/month for a 1BR/1BA apartment. The windows and patio doors are NOT well insulated, and cover half the surface of the apartment. The laundry room also gets very cold in the winter (you open the doors and the cold blasts you). The fireplace also lets in a lot of cold air, and the damper is on a spring so that you can't close it unless you tie it down with a shoelace or something. VERY cold in winter, and way too expensive to heat it to a comfortable temperature.
- Bathroom: The tub will be "resurfaced" when you move in, and my hunch is that they just coat it with paint. You can't clean it with anything abrasive, which means getting it truly clean is impossible (ie, no Clorox or bleach products allowed). Also, it has had a grainy feel ever since they surfaced it (probably because they sprayed over whatever grime was in the tub), and so you always feel like you're stepping on grit in the shower. Icky.
- ICC Construction: They're building the ICC behind the complex, and the construction can get very loud during the daytime weekday hours. Privacy obviously requires closing your blinds, too, which didn't used to be the case when it was tree-lined and wooded prior to the construction rolling in.
- Rent: It's by far the most expensive apartment complex in the immediate area, especially if you have a pet. However, there are no hidden fees for parking or anything like that. Hefty pet deposit ($400) and pet rent ($40/month).
