The complex was built in the 70s, and from the frequency at which my heat comes on (even in moderate weather), I suspect there's no insulation in the exterior walls at all. I'm on the first floor, and the floor is not properly insulated either... even through the carpeting you can feel the cold coming up.

The only serious problem (other than the outrageous electric bill) I've had is that there are some serious animal-haters in the complex who are making life hell for the front office.... we have a few (seriously not many) feral cats in the area, and a couple of people who seem to call the front office daily to complain about the poor things. Clearly they're too dumb to grasp that even surrounded by wooded area, and with multiple dumpsters onsite -- we don't have a rodent problem... because we have a few cats hanging around. But they want animal control to come kill them.... they're apparently also too dumb to grasp that if you remove the existing cats, others will just move in.

The front office was very good about my working with a rescue group to try to find homes for the cats.... now after all the bitching from the few nutcases they are not being cooperative at all. So far I've managed to rescue 7 cats from the complex.... unfortunately you can't do that quickly and the animal control officer who comes here sounds gleeful when he mentions "euthanizing" a cat. It's become a pretty intolerable situation for someone who loves animals.

Also, someone tried to break into my apartment one night -- almost breaking the door in... the flip lock was even cracked and would have given with one more hit. Luckily my 20lb attack cat started yowling and they changed their mind. To management's credit, someone was here replacing my locks and adding more within an hour or two of my notifying them of the problem. Since the area seems pretty safe, could just have been a drunk neighbor who was trying to get into the wrong apartment -- the buildings are identical, so it could easily happen.

Also, if you're planning on commuting into DC from here -- please think again... I've never had it take less than 45 minutes to get in, and once got stuck on 495 and had it take 3 hours.

If you like to walk, there's a nearby park that's really good for long walks, and has a rec center with indoor pool, gym and hottub.

There are a couple of grocery stores nearby, nothing too exciting. A small strip mall about 1/2-1 mile away... and an even smaller one about 1/2 mile from that. For fun shopping, movies, dining out, etc. plan on a bit of a drive.... but not horrible.

If it weren't for the fact that the office staff is friendly, courteous and tries to be helpful, I wouldn't still be here.
