Hampton Point Apartments
< | >
I lived in Hampton Point for three years, and found it pleasant.
I never liked the suburbs, so I hated the location, but if you're one of the many people that don't mind driving everywhere, it's actually pretty good: near several different shopping centers, and right off of Rt. 29. Parking was never a problem, although they seemed to have exactly enough parking spaces, so occasionally if I came back late at night I would have to walk a bit. The site is designed so that none of the spaces is too far from any of the the apartments, though.
The staff is friendly, and while certain of the low-level office workers are not terribly helpful, most are, and talking to the manager Carol will always get something fixed right away. When my refrigerator broke, I had a new (nicer model) one delivered the next day, and none of the other appliances (including the washer-dryer that each apartment gets) ever failed. The only real maintanence problem I ever had was the people upstairs being careless with their water, leading to a leak in the ceiling, and that took about three days to get solved.
The buildings themselves are decent. Standard suburban apartments, but very well-kept. They're fully cleaned every year (although you have to move everything off the balcony for that or the pressure cleaner will trash it) and the grounds are planted with cherry trees and other plants. Insulation on the balcony sliding doors was not particularly good, and I did ultimately have to spend my own money to improve it. It was only $10 of weather-stripping, but still.
Safety was never even something I thought about: I don't know of any crime that happened here other than one flashing, in all three years. Night visibility is excellent, and it's next door to a police station anyway.
Overall, the rent is a little higher than some places, but I think you get more for the money. My place was spacious, with a nice layout, good appliances, a balcony and a fireplace. The other residents are diverse (and I mean that in an actual "large variety" way, not the euphemistic "some of them aren't white" way) and friendly.

Did you find that you had particulary high electric bills like some of the other reviewers posted?

Seasonally. My particular apartment didn't get a lot of sun, so it was usually cooler. In the winter that meant $150 a month in heating costs, but in the summer I hardly had to use the AC, and had monthly bills of about $20. (Those are post-BGE-rate-hike.) Your experience will probably differ based on your particular apartment and your temperature tolerance. Also, note that I did spend $10 when I first moved in for some insulating foam to fill in drafty bits of the balcony doors.
