A Good Place in a Bad Neighborhood

I was in a 2 bedroom 1 bath unit and it was great for the price ($1220 with cat rent). First of all the office staff tries to make themselves as available as possible, and they all live in the building. So emergencies that need to be fixed, can be taken care of ASAP. The management here was the best management I have ever dealt with. And the pet policy allows cats for a decent price per month. It's not that bad, it's probably the best I've seen.

The apartment itself was spacious, there was 1 walk in closet that could store anything you could imagine. The kitchen was a little small, and the bathroom has horrible pink tile, but nothing's perfect.

The parking situation has since been dealt with, they're stringint on towing and checking to make sure there aren't any walk offs. Also in the parking lot, they have security cameras. My car was broken, along with 7 other cars or something of that nature, into while I lived there and the management was helpful with making sure that everything was okay and letting me know when the police came so I could do a statement if I wished. But the theives were considerate with my vehicle, as they relocked the doors afterwards. Although, there was also a weekend when I left my car windows open before I sold my old car and no one even went through the steal the change or anything. So take that as you will.

Every floor, except for the first, has a laundry room containing 2 washers and 2 dryers. The terrace level had quite a number more. Also, on the terrace level was the work out room, which was not the most impressive ever. Usually some machine was broken, some of the gear went missing, but it wasn't too shabby. They had a deal when I moved in, the first year was free and then after that you had to pay $10. It's open until about 11pm, so if you go in after 6pm, it's fairly uncrowded.

I did see bugs, some cockroaches, but they're pretty good about spraying. Considering in the year I lived there, I probably saw 4 and it coincided with everytime that someone around me moved in or out, I think they just got a little ansy and moved about. I suspect that the bathroom and kitchen vents of our unit were somehow hooked up to the units next to ours. And that's were the bugs seemed to come from.

The building is on the corner of 2 bus lines, the K6 that goes to Fort Totten and the 16 that does the Silver Spring Metro - Takoma Park Metro. On the K6 you can use your metro card, the 16 line, however, you have to pay in cash. It's also right over the hill to the University of Maryland and is on the Maryland bus route. The 16 line is more reliable, there were multiple instances where the K6 bus didn't show up for at least one scheduled stop. One time almost an hour went by before that hour's busses showed up, all 4 together.

The two things to worry about 1) the building was built in the 1950's so the pipes are old and sometimes cause problems. They're trying to replace them, but be aware that it's possible to have your apartment flood. Mine did, and there really wasn't anything they could do since they could not shut off the mains for the whole building. 2) If your a female, you might want to dress down while at the bus stop. The neighborhood is not the best. It could be worse if all the surrounding units were rentals, but there seems to be some home ownership in the area. But, like I said earlier, my car was broken into, and they attempted to break into the complex. There was also damage done to the laundry machine cash machine, and there has been other little bits of vandalism and stuff. Also, if your unit will overlook New Hampshire, be prepared for traffic. I learned how to tell the difference between all the emergency vehicles and even the counties.

Overall, if you're looking for someone in Maryland that's cost effective, I'd suggest it. Just be aware of your surroundings and give ample "Metro sucks" or "traffic sucks" time.
