I have lived in Carriage Hill for about eight months now and have not witnessed a lot of the problems that I hear many people complain about. Other than the fact that my neighbor over top of me needs to have her unit carpeted and a new bed that doesn't squeak when she's having sex, I have to say that CH is an okay place to live. There are some things that need to be addressed, but that is everywhere you go. The children are a bit unruly at times but I believe that's because they don't have anything constructive to do with their time. Many parents can't afford to put their children in programs and therefore, the only outlet that they have is to stand around in the community (which most consider as loitering). It gets on my nerves too and I have made a couple of complaints to resident services but no matter how many complaints we make, a lot of it starts with the parents.
In reference to the staff, they have always been courteous to me, especially Keisha and Jackie. I recently had two deaths in my family and was not able to meet my rental obligation on time. Both Anthony and Lucinda still displayed professionalism towards me rather than just throwing me, my children and my things out on the street. They worked with me and that usually doesn t happen in a lot of apartment communities. We have to keep in mind that the staff has a job to do and it isn t anything personal. There are no perfect people and yes, some people need to develop people skills or even take a course in customer service, but for the most part I believe they do a wonderful job. The older gentlemen who guard the gates are very nice and I like them a lot. They are very pleasant and I have no complaints about them whatsoever. I am though not as pleased with security and the parking situation but that's the breaks I guess for living in an apartment community.
As for drugs and crime, you will find that in almost every community. This is not unique to Carriage Hill but occurs all over the entire metropolitan area. Remember, we are bordering Southeast D.C. so we are going to have our share of crime. As for maintenance, they have always come when I called them and addressed my complaints promptly. If problems exist as a lot of tenants believe, maybe someone should organize a meeting where the tenants can get together to voice their concerns to the management team who manages the staff in the rental/leasing office so that the problems can be alleviated. Carriage Hill can stand improvement in some areas but as long as you and I plan to stay here, what plan of action do we intent to put in place' There are some who want to be a part of the solution and then there are those who only want to complaint and do nothing which one are you'
P.S. And for the record, I have never lived in an apartment complex that does all the other little quirks that they do. i.e, parties for the children, supplies for children, karaoke, etc.

It sounds like you are just grateful you weren't evicted. For those of us who paid our rent in a timely fashion and had no issues that required special favors, we are in a better position to be objective and tell things as they are instead of rationalizing that it can't be any better. I am someone who complained, attended meetings, offered solutions such as starting a volunteer-based youth program, and nothing was addressed. Carriage Hill thrives on the knowing that there are folks who will be around to put up with the b.s. and your letter suggests that their theory is correct.

You are in no better position than I am to be objective based on any situation regarding my business. I have excellent rental history here and I don't receive special favors. Your response "suggests" that you may need a refining in your attitude and learn how to talk to people. Because of the current recession and the number of homes that are in foreclosure, it might be a good idea for you to consider purchasing a home; then you won't have to put up with the crap that comes along with apartment living. I don't like a lot of things that go on here too but when it becomes too much, I'll leave. It's not that hard to do. Or better yet, if you are not going to go out of your way to be a part of the solution, then mind your business, stay out of mine, and stop causing problems.
