When it was Marlow Overlook in the 60s and 70s

I grew up in the area, and used to live nearby in one of those duplexes across Raleigh road on Akron Street. I'm sorry to read such bad things about this apartment complex. As a boy I really enjoyed playing there. The basement laundry and trash rooms were interconnected to other buildings and we used to run through there all the time. It was also a good area to find returnable soda bottles, which we would take to the 7-11 across from the bowling alley, for first 2 1/2 cents each, then it became 5 cents.

The complex was also a great place to go Trick or Treating, because of all those residences in each building, giving you a lot of bang for the buck. Another bit of historical trivia: Raleigh Road (which several buildings overlook) used to dead end and you had to walk across a foot bridge to get to Olson Street. Storm/drain tunnels were put in place around '72 or so, which started at the end of Olson Street, before it becomes 23rd Parkway. This allowed Raleigh Road to be extended to intersect with Olson Street.

Again, sorry to hear about the conditions there today, but sooner or later every neighborhood that has been in decline picks itself back up. If you want to know what the area was like "back in the day" go to my retro website: www.marlowheights60sand70s.com

I just moved from Princeton Estates and every comment about the complex is corret to the utmost. My horror is when they moved me in my first about there back in 2005. My apartment was not ready but yet they still issued my keys. I felt violated in everyway as a citizen lease holder & woman because the badroom was horriable they hadn't had anyone to properly clean the bathroom s--t was all over the toilet and there was not water. I sent a complaint to the manager and regional office demanding so type of discount or refund of course they gave me 2 more weeks off my rent and the manager was either fired or transferred also, I transferred to another apartment on the complex and we were okay for awhile until the Ghetto crew came along. You know your ghetto when your electric is off and you take a extension cord and plug it up in the hallway to get electricty well that's what my ghetto fabulous neighbor did! I could'nt believe this I don't think I ever saw this on any movie!!!!! They were always breaking the glass to the front doors of most apartments I must say under unfortunate circumstances I am very glad to be away from there! It's so sad that they seem to know how to put all of us together in one big black pot meaning the ones that are on Section-8, bad credit and always advertising too good to be true specials always look out for that and that's a fact!!!!!!!!!!

Chuck is right, it was a lovely place once-upon-a-time. My family lived at Marlow Overlook until 1974 and it was absolutely wonderful for children. The footbridge was a special treat! The woods out-back were tremendous: snakes, turtles, and lizards in abundance. There was also a big tree that laid across the creek; it was a right of passage to be able to walk across it! The interconnected buildings, via the "sub-terranean" passageways, was something I'll never forget. I don't remember roaches but there were what we called "water-bugs." I suppose they were roaches but as a young boy I just called them fun! I was assaulted once by an older boy there and when my family moved it was generally acknowledged that the neighborhood was declining. I'm very sorry to hear what's become of the neighborhood but, in my mind, it will always be sunny with the Good Humor truck ringing its bells, the pool opening in spring, and the milkman bringing fresh milk to be deposited in the coolers out in front of the apartment building. Good times and noodle salad, I hope it will become that again.
