Great Place to Live

I moved into Ivy Hall with a friend just before getting into law school and lived there for 2.5 years. All in all, living there was a great experience.

The quality of the building construction was really solid, with very thick walls between apartments and between floors. I never heard any noise whatsoever from my neighbors and could only very, very faintly hear the upstairs residents vacuuming their tile bathroom floor. The apartments were very spacious, at least in terms of what two single guys needed. I never had any problems with rodents or bugs. Parking was adequate and the parking lot was well maintained, being painted every year and re-sealed when needed. The residents, while they are mostly older, were extremely nice; they would even leave us cookies and candy outside our door during holidays. Maintenance was always quick to answer repair calls and generally seemed to care about taking care of any problems that cropped up. Apartment management staff was very friendly and always tried to accommodate the residents. There is trash collection on week days (up to 2 bags if placed outside your apartment door by 8 am). Snow removal during the winter was good.

As for some of the issues that I had, the appliances in the apartment, while in working order, were old. We had a very inefficient washer and dryer and only after several complaints about the dryer taking 2 or 3 full cycles to dry a load of laundry did we get a new one. It seemed like every time the weather warmed up our air conditioning would go out and maintenance would have to be called to "recharge" it. The windows, while being thick and keeping noise out, were old, which, along with a likely equally old sliding glass door, meant that our electric bill each month was pretty high to go along with a pretty steep rent. Finally, you can hear cars on the beltway from the apartments fairly well if you're outside or have your windows open...not much you can do about that, but still nice to know.
