Poor service, rude/inept management, good location

Hi folks, I've been at Amherst Square awhile now so I've got a bit of feedback.

The washing machines in our building don't work, so us tenants called the laundry company for service. They've done nothing so far. Now someone at the rental office has even taken down the sign in the laundry room with the laundry company's phone number. (We may put up our own sign now. ;)

Back at move-in time, I had to process the employment/income verification and pepco papers for the leasing agents who dropped the ball on these things. (One of our new neighbors actually lost power for a few days due to mismangement of paperwork by the leasing office.)

Neither phone jack in the bedroom worked. Managemwent said the apartment was painted when it wasn't (food stains on walls a giveaway.) The wood floors were nice noce we caulked the cracks with clear caulk to keep the roaches from coming up from messier apartments below.

The stove was a deathtrap, but management said that was fine too. I offered to trade my fine stove for theirs- they got us a new one.

That all said, I'd like to put in a good word for the courteous maintenance guys who've stopped in to fix a leak here and there or change filters and whatnot.

Another great thing about these apartments is the proximity to wheaton metro station, restaurants, a mall and so on. When our lease expires, we intend to move out to another apartment complex right near here.

Oh yeah, if they tell you the rent on 2 bedrooms is 976/month over the phone, they might say 1076/month when you get there and explain that 976 is for low income folks. Every time they answered the phone while I was in the office, they were citing 976 as the price on 2-bedrooms. They told my wife 1076 over the phone and me 976 when I called. She happens to be black and I happen to be white- take that for what you will. Also when you're there, they might tell you no other apartments are available, but there's always something available when you call to ask.

The only reason I'd renew my lease is if I took a leasing agent position from smoeone here and could be sure the job would be done well and right. (At present I work in a more upscale apartment building in DC.)

All in all the place isn't very nice, but it's much better than an actual slum would be, so I'd give it a star or two. Look around at all the other apartments in wheaton before settling here though.
