Unfortunately, I'm not shocked...

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006
...at the comments and ratings I've read on this site. My wife and I lived in the Montgomery @ Wheaton Metro from June 2005 to June 2006. We leased our apartment for a year, before purchasing a home in Washington, DC. Now, I have to admit that the first 8 to 10 months were WONDERFUL!! We were renting a 2bed/2bath apartment home with balcony and fireplace. But, understand that when we leased our apartment, the community was brand new. So new, that we were given a pro-rated 1 bedroom for the first 2 months of our lease, because our 2 bedroom apartment wasn't complete.
We absolutely LOVED that place when we first moved in. The management was fantastic, the amenities were even better. There wasn't any real crime in the area. My wife and daughter would walk to the metro in the mornings and evenings. We had a parking space in the garage, and never had issues finding parking. Our neighbors were great. Everyday, there was cookies and juice in the clubhouse. The place was quiet, and the business office was great. We could wash clothes right in our apartment, and never had any major appliance issues. The one time our dishwasher went on the fritz, Sonny was right there to fix it. The closet space was phenominal, and I loved to balcony for an early morning cigarette and coffee. During the winter, we'd have the fireplace going, and my daughter loved the pool during the hot months. We were able to rent movies from the clubhouse, and I could work out in the gym at nights with no problems. The security gates worked effeciently and even the lobby was a nice place to read the paper and relax. Again, we absolutely loved that place!!
Then, about 10 months into our lease, things started to fall apart. Security gates were always broken. More and more teenage kids were seen around the complex throwing glass bottles in the garage, running up and down the hallways, screaming down the hallways at each other. On numerous occasions, while sitting in the business center, unmonitored kids would crawl through the window from the balcony of the clubhouse. Parents would place their kids at all of the computers (that were working at the time)playing games for HOURS, and you couldn't use the "business" center to conduct "business". Cookies and tea/coffee or juice became less frequent, eventually being stopped altogether. When we addressed our concern about this to management, we were told that this amenity was becoming "too expensive" to maintain. This was a new manager, by the way. Simultaneously, our rent was expected to "increase" the following year. Various equipment in the gym would be consistently broken. We watched, in a matter of months, the quality of the Montgomery @ Wheaton take a spiraling downward turn. So much, that by the time we were to decide whether or not to re-sign our lease, we were RUNNING out of the door. We didn't even have another home lined up, but we KNEW we wouldn't be living there for another year.
In all, that was a beautiful place for more than half the time we lived there. We had easy access to the mall, other stores and restuarants..and more importantly, the metro. When I had vehicular problems for a couple of months, I could easily take the bus or metro to work in Rockville. We loved that complex, and were more than happy to entertain guests in our apartment. Our friends loved the place also. I don't know exactly what led to the community becoming what it has become, but I'm not surprised. We saw it coming, and promptly got out of its way. Some people have said it was management. Others have said it was the caliber of tenants they were leasing the apartments to. I don't believe it was so much the "lower income" tenants as one person put it. (lower income to be taken as "minority" tenants). My wife and I are both ------- American, and neither come from a wealthy background. But, at no point have I ever not taken pride in my home or community. Not to get political on here, but I felt it needed to be said. Now that we are in the "6-Figure" salary bracket, we take no more pride in our surroundings than before. It was never a matter of money. I believe Bozzuto saw a cash cow and attempted to exploit it. When they could not keep up the cherade, they opted to dump it. It's sad, because it was such a great place, with such great potential.
All that are still there, I hope the best for you. Be blessed.
