Nice Place Overall

My husband and I have lived here for three years, and it's been a good experience overall.
Pros:
1) Safe, quiet neighborhood. I've never felt uneasy taking out the trash or walking my dog late at night. Most of our neighbors are young professionals or retirees, so it's pretty quiet.
2) Pet friendly. For people with large dogs, this is a great place. There's a fenced dog park and bag stations throughout the grounds, so there's no reason not to clean up after a pet.
3) The maintenance staff is very reliable. We've had a few issues with our ac and leaks, and they've always come by the same day we've called to fix the problem.
4) Plenty of parking.
5) Convenient location. It's a two minute drive to the mall, the Avenue and 95.
Cons:
1) Creaky floors/thin walls - we live on the first floor, so it's expected that we'll hear the upstairs neighbors occasionally. Unfortunately, the past two tenants have been heavy walkers and had little kids, so it can be irritating at times.
2) Drafty windows and doors - in the winter, we can feel cold air coming through the cracks. We've improvised by putting plastic over the window and stuffing a towel under the door, but proper installation would have prevented this.
3) Dog poop - while it's a great place to live if you have pets, there are a few people who don't pick up after their dogs, which can make for an unpleasant surprise if you cut across the grass.
4) Little storage - we have a hall closet and a bedroom closet in our apartment - no linen closet, pantry, or outside storage. They offer garages for an additional $125 per month, but for us, it's not worth the added expense.
Southfield is a little pricey for the apartment sizes they offer, but you're really paying for the location, amenities and convenience. We've shopped around the other pet-friendly communities in the area and found that the cheaper places are either in sketchy neighborhoods or they don't offer a washer & dryer in the apartment. The more expensive ones offer the same amenities as Southfield, so why pay more'
