I've lived in these apartments for almost three weeks now. I moved in with two friends who have lived here for almost a year now. We got a really good deal on our lease and renewel and the apartment is very spacious. On the other hand our rooms often smell of smoke (we do not smoke). My room is generally ok but the master room sometimes smells like my roomate smokes regularly, especially when the showers are in use. We've complained to management but they think it's because we leave our windows open (in which they've never been open in the rooms when they've smelled). We think it's the poor ventilation they built into the apartments and may not be fixable.
I understand that apartments on the bottom floor (which we have) tend to be more prone to bug problems; however, there was an ant issue right before I moved in which they did come out to fix it; however, there are so many spiders. Two days ago I killed a spider on my window seal, two rolly-pollys(sp) on the wall and two other tiny beetle like bugs on the ceiling and this morning I killed a large spider in my shower, one on the ceiling above the hallway sink and one on the linen closet door. I'm not sure if every bottom floor apartment encounters this big of a problem but I'm almost ready to leave because of it. Any suggestions'
In addition, the security makes me leary. The locks on the main doors to the building look like they are about to fall out (I'm sure because people pull the door open with their key still in the lock) but regardless, it doesn't make me feel any better about the situation. Although I was told that one of the two dryers available does not seem to dry clothes very well, by the time I went to use it, the dryer had been serviced and seemed to work fine.
Overall, I'm not very satisfied with these apartments, but for someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of money to rent a place, these apartments would suit.

I live in Glencoe Hills myself. The beetle-like bugs are probably cochroaches. It's not because you live on the bottom floor. There was a huge roach problem in my building, too and I live on the top floor. They had someone come out and spray for the bugs, but I am still very uncomfortable in my apartment. From what I read on these posts, we are lucky we just have bugs. There are others that have bug and critter problems together. As for the smell, the best thing you can do is keep the windows open. Opening and airing out all the closets might help also. The closets in my apartment smell like smoke which makes my clothes smell as well and I don't smoke. You figure after people living in these apartments for over 30 years and the little care that goes into turning over an apartment, it's no wonder they all smell.
