Management is clueless!

Just received a memo from management today stating precautions to take to help curtail the "criminal activity" here at Glencoe Hills, such as "don't walk alone", "lock your door" (DUH!), and "don't leave valuables in sight inside your car". Excuse me but, apartment doors are being kicked in and crow-barred open!!! None of their stupid recommendations even apply! They suggest we set our alarm systems, but none of these apartments come with an alarm system!!! Like I said...management is clueless and a waste!
The place is going downhill fast. There are about 1-2 break-ins each week! Cars being broken in a lot as well. Management is the worst! They claim they have security that patrols the area, yet they don't even show up after a break-in while the police are there. What a waste! I'm getting out as soon as I can. It's getting too scary to live here. One couple left their apartment for 1 hour and came back to find their place cleaned out. I'm concerned for my kid's safety!

Are we able to put additional locks on the outside of the apartment given that keys are provided to management?

Management requires (per your lease) that they have access. You can change your lock, but you must issue a key to maintenance. They have a computerized key control system that actually detects when keys are removed....they get swiped out then back in. Reports are pulled to review for exceptions like a set not being returned by end of day. If a set is removed without being swiped, it will show up. Very smart system to protect management company from liability resulting from scenario that you imply--worker takes keys, rips off resident, returns keys. Incorrect stereotyping/assumption on your part. Keys aren't provided to management, they are provided to you. Folks, you need to realize that the apartment complex is your neighborhood. Treat is as such--organize watch groups, call police on suspicious behavior, keep your hall neat and clean.....not too hard to do. When you move into a house one day, you will face the same issues. Mark my words.

I'm sorry, how do you expect management to take responsibility for the rise in crime? The management is just there to manage the day-to-day business of the landlord, McKinley. Collect rent, maintain grounds, show apartments, get new leases signed, perform general maintenance.....these are the things that management does. Patrolling the area, arresting thieves, catching criminals, responding to citizen calls for help......these are things Police do. As far as blaming the residents, well who is propping the door open and tampering with the locks? You yourself said it was your neighbor, therefore blame can be partially placed on residents. The neighbor propping the door is a resident. Instead of taking it personally, work on figuring out who the stupid --- is that's putting your building at higher risk. The patrol can't do anything if they wanted to, they are NOT THE POLICE!!! All they'll do is call the cops and you can do that yourself. I worked at Glencoe and am saddened that the majority of posts are complaints. Worse, the complaints aren't about something that the people who work there did. Thousands upon thousands of residents have enjoyed their stay at Glencoe. Unfortunately, sites like this attract those with a beef or who are looking to vent and the good stuff gets buried.

In the letter, I find it funny that management does not address the problem of residents that put a stick or rock in the outside door to keep it open. Not only does my building have that problem, but there is a problem with the locks being broken as well. I believe that management is trying to shift the blame of the rise in crime to the residents and is not taking responsibility for the rise in crime much at all. If I could afford to live somewhere else, I certainly would. Our "neighborhood" is not the highest class on the block, but I feel we deserve to live in a safe community just like those that have money to throw around. I've seen the "patrol" truck driving around only once in the year I've lived in Glencoe Hills. The truck spent quite a bit of time parked in the corner of the lot near the woods. Now that's some high-end security guard if I've ever seen one.

Nice! I only been here since the end of January, and seven days of living here, my car got broken into, ignition busted, and the cops asked me am I sure it didn't happen in Detroit and I drove it out here. I was like no! Besides the area in Detroit I'm from isn't bad at all, but anyway that really shouldn't have come from his mouth! My apartment has a leak under the livingroom window of a leak that was repaired prior to me moving here. It's been three months and no one hasn't come to fix it. It gets worst every time it rains.
