I moved into Glencoe about a year ago. At first it seemed like an "alright" place to live. As time went on though, I found out otherwise.
The doors to get into our apartment have been broken/missing about ten times since I've moved in. It's super annoying when they're broken because the key wont work. I feel very unsafe whenever there is no lock whatsoever.
I live on the third floor and my heating bill was always outrageous. The sliding glass doors have a big effect since they never seem to keep in heat. We have the opposite problem in the summer. We had to have our air fixed three times becuase the air conditioning kept running, if you didn't turn it off the apt would reach about 50 degress.
My tires got slashed, as well as neghbors getting their cars broken into and tires slashed. Overall I never felt safe. The person across the hall got there apartment broken into and all their things stolen. There was a murder a few months back. There is always "shady" people walking around. I also had problems with people being outside my apt and yelling at all hours of the night.
My friend lived at another building. She had an ant problem that NEVER went away, even though they sprayed for them many times. She has a dog, so whenever they would spray we would have to find a place for the dog to stay (very annoying after the fourth time)
I have had many problems with Managment. From calling about broken things to them losing my check and trying to add on late fees. Many times they were rude on the phone. Office staff will tell you things that are not true.
Snow is a problem in the winter. Cars get plowed in all the time. The parking lots are like a sheet of ice. Also I work nights and got home around 4am one night to wake up 4 hours later to people shoveling snow off the roof over my head. Extremely loud!
The walls are paper thin. I can hear everything my roomate does when I'm in my room. Whenever I'm in the bathroom I can hear my neighbors underneath me. If another persons shower is on, you can hear it. Water pressure is horrible too.
The hallways smell horrible. For some reason the second floor always smells like landfill, or backed up sewage.
Our fridge broke and froze half of the stuff in it and melted everything in the freezer. It also leaked water everywhere.
The pool by the office is nice, the other one not so much though. I loved the paths and the ponds. Just never go out after dark! Another good point is Glencoe is on the bus line and in walking distance to shopping and food places. The grounds are beautiful in the summer.
I pay the cheapest you can for my apartment and I don't think it's worth it.
I don't see how others can pay $200-$300 more.
