Rent Increases are HUGE!!

Overall, the apartment was fair, however one problem occurred when I attempted to renew my lease. When intially moving in, I was given a great deal--$790 a month. However when I went to renew my lease for another year, they wanted to charge me $940! A $150 per month rent increase. When I told them that I have no problem paying more, a 19% rent increase is out of the question. I told them I would pay no more than $845 a month, which is STILL a 7% increase. They said they would get back to me the following Monday. TWO weeks went by, and I decided to turn in my notice to vacate. They seem to be perfectly comfortable not renewing people's leases and looking for new tenants. It doesn't make much sense, since they'll probably have to offer a low rent incentive to acquire a new leasee, however this is what they did to me.
As far as the apartment goes, it is decent. Large living space, lots of closet room. Balcony is a plus. Washer & Dryer in apartment worked great and were a huge convenience. I had a few maintenence issues, but they were fixed very quickly. Electricity bill usually around $75/month. Free standard cable is a bonus. Utility bill seems unfair--approx. $25 a month for sewer & trash. Those should be included in the rent. If water was metered on each apartment it would be fair, but they meter each building (about 20 units per building) and then divide by number of apartments. So if I am conserving water and my neighbor lets their faucet run all day, it's not fair.
Office staff is really not helpful at all. When I moved in there was a great worker there who did everything he could to make sure I was happy. He disappeared 2 months into my lease. He was replaced by staff that always answered inquiries with "i'll have to check into that" or something of the like. I must stress again--Maintenance staff was exceptional! I am speaking of the office staff that I was not happy with.
Many people don't pick up their dog poop. It gets kind of annoying sometimes.
