Only live here if you're broke, have no other options, and you know it's temporary

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2004
I moved here two years ago knowing the place wasn't that great. In general - it does not have a good reputation around town. But I was in a bind, I figured it would only be for a year and I figured that at least the units they showed seemed clean and in decent shape.
Clearly - that was just the units they showed! The first day I moved in I came into an apartment that was a total disgusting mess. There was dirt in the bathtub, dead bug carcasses in the cabinets and the toilet wasn't even flushed! I spent three days cleaning the apartment from top to bottom before it was tolerable. The unit is air conditioned by an individual unit which sounds like a small airplane, emits very little cool air and leaks so much the carpet around it get's totally soaked everytime you use it. The front panel doesn't stay on it either (this is mainly due to the last time I called to complain about the unit - they came in and apparently just jammed a new unit into the slot without regard to actually making sure it was in place, part of the panel was broken, hanging off and the draft that comes from underneath it in the winter leaves me to believe there is a pretty wide gap straight to the outside underneath it - and of course, the new unit doesn't work any better than the one they replaced!)
The windows are so drafty that I can't even keep plastic on them in the winter because the draft that comes through is so hard the plastic pops off! The window locks are all broken and the gaps at the bottom of the windows AFTER they are closed ranges from 1/4 inch to a 1/2 inch depending on the window.
I live in one of the one bedroom units (located in three buildings at the far end of the complex). These buildings, while supposedly newer than the rest of the complex, are very run down. The carpets are worn and absolutely reek of animal stench (it honestly smells like a kennel in my building and everytime I have company the stench is commented on). They recently made a half-hearted attempt and replaced the carpet just inside the door and up the first flight of steps - uh, thanks, but can you complete the job' They also recently made the building secure by installing a call-up system for entrance - uh yeah - so far I've only had to use my key once to get into the bldg - the door they put in doesn't quite fit so it doesn't shut all the way, making it easy to still just walk right in. We also get notices at least once or twice a month stating that they will be entering our apartments for "pest control" - this is a bit disturbing - granted, I haven't had any run-ins with nasty bugs save for some ants my first year (and the bug carcasses I had to clean up when I first moved in) I find it unsettling that our building has such a profound "unseen" bug problem that merits a once or twice monthly visit. Hmmm. - I actually just try not to think abou this!
Neighbors are ok if you don't have the misfortune as I do to live above someone who regularly throws parties every Sunday evening starting at midnight.
The staff, management, and maitenance all leave something to be desired. They are nice enough in personality but not very helpful. I've walked into the leasing office on a number of occasions only to find the girls there watching a soap opera. The apartment manager told me there was no way they would offer me a 6 month lease when my lease came up last summer so begrudgingly I had to sign on for another year (I'm finally leaving for good next month, however) but I just recently got a notice that I can sign on for 6 months - whether this is a new thing as of this year or whether they were just jacking me around last year I don't know for sure. Maintenance is prompt but their fixes are often cosmetic I've called numerous time on my window and my AC and they always come quickly - however, I still have the same problem with them I had at the beginning! What are they doing exactly - I've finally just given up.
If I had to say something good its that Ann Arbor in general is a nice town and the area is pretty good - nice shopping center nearby and brand new very big Whole Foods just down the road. Also - very quick drive to the Airport! Pool isn't so bad either. And they did just replace the washing machines (of course, now that I'm leaving!)
But you know, if you can squeeze out a few more dollars and make it work somewhere else I would.
