Years at this apartment: 1999 - 2001
We had a gigantic two-bedroom for a very low price, considering Ann Arbor's average rental price. We couldn't believe it. Utilities were not included, but our bills weren't too bad. Our apartment was fairly well-insulated, except for the windows, but covering them with plastic and curtains helped quite a bit.
They placed everyone in buildings that suited their lifestyle, so you had students together, families across the way, and then generic "twentysomethings". Our building was nice and quiet, and we got along with our neighbors.
Laundry facilities are available, and dumpsters are plentiful. The parking was adequate. I never had to search for a spot, and I could always park near my building, if not directly in front of the door.
The grounds were kept up, and they plowed and shoveled in the winter. The maintenance requests were filled within 36 hours. We did not have a problem with pests, except some ants. We cleared that up with a couple of traps, which the office reimbursed us for. (Rinsing your soda cans out when collecting them to take back to the store can help reduce this, by the way).
The master bedroom is huge and has a giant walk-in closet. Seriously. The office told us some married couples used their walk-in closet as a nursery. That's how big it is. The second, "smaller" bedroom is a good size. I had room for a double bed, computer desk, dresser, two bookcases, and a stereo. It also has a large, double closet (not walk-in).
The hallway has a large, double closet for linens and towels. The bathroom has a space under the counter where you could put your cat litter, and the mirror covers the entire wall above the counter. The rooms are spacious, and each apartment has a fenced-in patio or balcony. The front closet (near the door) is humongous. We both gasped when we opened it. We used it for coats, shoes, and storage. It's like a tiny room.
Most people have pets. You can keep a dog, even a large one, as long as you clean up after it and keep it from barking all the time. We had three cats, and the management didn't even bat an eye.
The property has two pools -- one large one and one smaller one -- and several big courtyards with trees. It's a great place to exercise, walk your dog, or let your kids play. They even have a playground!
We never felt unsafe. My roommate often went for walks at night while wearing headphones. Our apartment had a deadbolt, chain, and peephole.
I recommend Spicetree if you are a student at UM, EMU, or WCC (it's right on Washtenaw and directly in-between both cities). You can catch the bus easily, and it's only a few seconds from U.S. 23. You're also near several grocery stores, including Farmer Jack and Meijer.
