Hidden gem

Spruce Knob is a wonderful place to live, in my opinion. You can get a 700 sq ft apartment, sufficient for a young couple, for less than $800 per month (which is dirt cheap in AA). The grounds are spotless and maintenance comes within 18 hours to fix anything. They even leave a treat for your dog when the come!!!

It's a really great community, in my opinion. Lots of animal lovers. People have BBQs together and so on. The day the big blackout hit the Midwest, people in adjacent buildings cracked out their BBQs and cooked up things people had in their freezers. What should have been a "disaster" turned into a social mixer!

The rents are cheaper here because the property is adjacent to I-94 freeway. The sound of passing cars *IS* present, but it is not problematic or annoying--simply a din of white noise in the background. No honking or anything annoying like that.

The property is right on the AATA bus route #5 (see www.theride.org for maps), and it has a covered bus stop for those waiting in bad weather to get into campus. Spruce Knob has lots of grad students and professionals, so you won't run into the noise problems seen closer to campus.

The staff in the office are wonderful. When we lived in Spruce Knob (before buying our first home), I used to stop by just to get cookies and talk about life. The staff also holds packages for you if you are not home.

Spruce Knob is a hidden gem in a mountain of coal around Ann Arbor, imo. Apartments anywhere near the UM campus are $1000 per month, and are really shoddy. Too many undergrads who don't care about the apartments and basically trash them.

I highly recommend the community at Spruce Knob and have helped several grad student friends find places there. I must like the place if it is 2007 now, my wife and I moved out in 2003!! :-)

i'm glad you enjoyed your stay here, my experience was less than pleasant. I liked the neighborhood, disliked the maintenance, they walked into my apartment on 2 occasions without authorization while my boyfriend and i were in bed sleeping, then failed to show up when we had an appointment.
