Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2009
I moved into a one bedroom last summer based on the rating here. I am at UM for grad school and was skeptical about my first apartment experience. The staff is the main reason I renewed my lease. Coming from the south I was petrified of the Michigan winter, but throughout the snowy season they were constantly taking care of the sidewalks and other areas. I even saw them blowing snow off some of the cars. The staff is visible and friendly and any question I had was addressed quickly.
The one bedroom is roomy and I am very comfortable here.
The only negatives to the apartment are the narrow kitchen and an old bathroom faucet I never cared enough about to bring up to the staff. I was worried about the heating bill in winter due to the huge window in the living room but I never went over the amount the management stated as the average and I kept my apt. much warmer than most.
The soundproofing is typically well done, but you can hear the many music students practice. It was pleasant outside of a trombone player that woke me up many days, but most were respectful and followed the 10am-10pm noise rule. I have had noise issues with people in the bottom floor apartments having parties or loudly talking outside their sliding doors, but that is to be expected in a college town and was usually only on weekends in the fall and spring. The winter is blissfully quiet.
After a year I am happy I moved here instead of a smaller apartment in the downtown area. It takes a little longer to bus or drive to central campus or shops, but I am secure any problems I have will be fixed and have much more room than most of my peers.
