I am thinking about moving to TK. I have read all the reviews and still feel like I am on the fence. I really want honest and specific information about the property. Please give me any information, good or bad, about the property.

Hi!! I am a current TK resident. I've been here for YEARS. I love my apartment (the size of it, etc.), but the management, and sometimes maintenance, are awful. I've taken a read through most of the reviews posted here, and I would agree with most of the "concerned" residents in their reviews. My experience living here mirrors what they say (which is mostly negative). TK's rating a few months ago was in the 30%.... a few recent positive ratings have raised this, but I'm a little alarmed by these new reviews as they don't seem to accurately depict life at TK. I did just see a really detailed review posted today which is excellent and sums up most things about living at TK. I would encourage you to read it, titled "everything, the good and the bad". I plan to move out at the end of my lease because management refuses to work with current residents, they aren't flexible, etc. There are fliers all over proclaiming "FREE RENT!!" "2BR starting at $659!!" Excuse me?! I live in a 1BR and I pay significantly more than that and they aren't willing to work with someone who has been a loyal, good resident. I was forced into signing a lease which is longer than I need because they decided not to do MTM leases anymore--but TK caters to grad students whose timing doesn't always synchronize with the academic calendar. I'm fed up with them.
If you do move here, just be prepared for what you are getting yourself into. And make sure you get a UM discount!! If they still offer that!!

Mildew problems: maintenance tells me this is particularly a problem in the largest 2 bedroom apartments. Basically, mildew forms on window frames, in corners of the walls, behind furniture, etc on walls that face the outside as soon as the temperature drops outside below 65 or so (when condensation starts forming on windows). At the very least, you'll want to spray a bleach solution on these black spots as soon as they emerge. You might be able to prevent it by wiping down the window frames at least once a week or so to get rid of all the condensation. When we came back from the winter holidays, there were 4" long icicles in one of the windows! I once thought I had bleached all the problem spots, when I discovered there was mildew growing behind my bed. Disgusting.
Heat: In the modern apartments, whether the entire building is on heat or a/c is determined by the management. Each room has individual blowers that blow the hot (or cold) air into your apartment, and the blowers are set to a thermostat. When it's really hot or really cold outside, the climate control works fine, but during transition seasons it can be very annoying. For example, in the spring when the management still has the climate control set to heat, even if you turn off all the blowers, residual heat still rises from the blowers, which can make the apartment warmer than is comfortable, and vice versa in the fall. This year, management tacked on a "heat/utility fee," even though the price of gas/electricity has FALLEN over the last year!

Thanks so much for all the information-it is very helpful! Anyone know about issues concerning the contemporary floor plan or are they same as the modern?

hahah I think its really funny when people take the wrong information and make a big deal out of it. I have currently put in an application and there aren't any two bedrooms at $659 nor was there ever, I've been watching for the lowest price. Its unfortunate, but if you buy something and then it goes on clearance a year later, you dont get the discounted price at that point. its just how life works. Quit hating and just enjoy life.. its people like you that make the world a bad place.
