Heed the Warnings: Look Elsewhere for Housing

University Towers was a last resort for my roommates and I after getting a late start on searching for housing. It was very clear how desperate they were for tenants because for every minute I held off signing the lease, they tried to tempt us with "gifts" and price cuts. It was very sketchy from the beginning, but we had no other options but to sign the lease and hope for the best.

Upon moving into the apartment, my roommates and I were shocked to see a grotesque dump that was slated to be our home for the next year. The floors had rust stains and cracks, the kitchen was very dirty and much smaller than the one in the "model", the bathroom tile had blackened grout, the "shower" had cracks and holes in it, and it was very clear that the paint job promised in the lease before move-in was never done. After moving me in, my mother went to the front desk and insisted that the maintenance crew clean the apartment (which never happened) and fulfill numerous maintenance requests (they only fulfilled one.

Two weeks into the year, the shower drain was so clogged that bathing had to be interrupted to allow the water to slowly drain before continuing. Moreover, there was NEVER a guarantee that the water would be warm, unless you were willing to wait 20 minutes for the water to reach room temperature. Basically, within two weeks of moving in, my roommates and I were already looking into housing for the next year.

The biggest frustration was getting money taken from our security deposit due to problems that existed before move-in. Moreover, their itemization for damage is so vague that it would not surprise me if they did not even check the rooms before assessing the damage.

There are few positives I can pull from this place. One was the helpfulness of the maintenance staff. While it was unfortunate that I saw them at least once a month, they were very kind and responded very quickly after the initial move-in problems. The other positive is that the location is essentially unbeatable since it is located in the center of campus. However, location means nothing when your living arrangements make you cringe every time you walk in your front door.

In closing, my experience in University Towers will never be forgotten. I will always remember how I should have started looking for housing earlier the year before and how I should have just turned around and walked out the door when they began trying to force me to sign a lease. Do not make the same mistake I made.
