You can get better elsewhere for the same price.

This place looks great when you first look through. We had a first floor apartment and had a lot of problems with carpenter ants. We complained about them multiple times, but the management doesn't do anything. Also, the noise from the freeway right next to the complex is a problem. You are right by an on-ramp/off-ramp, so you can hear everything through the thin walls. Also, the walls are made up of really strange material that you can't hang any sort of pictures or structures from. It's not drywall, the stud finder goes wacky.
Don't believe them if they tell you you won't be able to hear the freeway, you will. The "secure gated entry" is a joke. It's broke half the time and most people know the maintenance code to get through anyway. There has been many problems with security, and the management doesn't inform the residents about them. Twice, we've had a man trying to get into our apartment when we're INSIDE. Luckily, we've been home and scared him off. Other friends in the same complex have had their cars broken into and others have had people trying to get into their apartments. The management does nothing. It takes them months to fix the gates. Not that the gates stop the burglars.
I would not recommend it at all.

Where exactly can you get better elsewhere for the same price? In North Carolina? I looked around Ann Arbor quite a bit, and couldn't find anything this nice for anywhere near this price.
In terms of ants, to the extent you have a problem with them, you can generally address it with "Contact" type traps. If you actually live right by the freeway, you might be able to hear the freeway -- that's why I didn't get a unit right by it. I never hear the freeway in my apartment, even when I'm outside my unit. I consider the nearby entrance/exit a convenience, and one of the reasons I chose the complex. I can get on US-23, M-14, and I-94 all very easily when I need to.
I have several pictures and somewhat heavy items nailed up, no problem there. The poster's right about the gates, but I prefer it when they're not working anyway, as using the security card or the password is a pain. This complex it outside the city, so it's not a high-crime area by any means, and I've never heard of anyone having any real security issues. (Supposedly a state cop lives on site, which also discourages intruders.)
I think most of the complainers on here must come from areas where land is very cheap, and they can therefore get more for their money, but as far as Ann Arbor goes, I'm not aware of any complexes this nice and relatively new, with this many amenities. It has a nice pool, hot tub, racquetball, tennis courts, nicely landscaped, right next to nicely wooded areas and parks, and yet also not far from ann arbor and ypsi. I've never felt unsafe here, I see deer and woodland animals all the time right outside the complex, and I'm amazed at how little I pay for everything I have, especially compared to the dumps I see in ann arbor for the same price (or more). I've lived in Ann Arbor, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, and visited most other major american cities, and I've never seen anyplace this nice at such an inexpensive rate.
I guess, bottom line, I'd request that the critics note actual places in the ann arbor area that are truly better for the price you can pay here, which includes apartments for under $700. The only real problem I have with VG is the workout room, which could definitely use an upgrade on their weight machine. (Treadmill seems okay). However, the local community college has a very nice, brand new fitness center 1/4 mile down the road, so even that's really not a big deal.

I am not sure why a State Cop who "supposedly" lives on site would discourage burglars. A proper security gate would help put up more of an illusion of good security than a cop living there. Why have the gate when everyone knows it is a joke? they guard that garbage bin 24 hours a day, why not move it to the front gate area.
