Good First Apartment

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
I moved out of here about 4 months ago after a year of living. First of all, I'd like to say that the management here is very helpful and really seems to care about its residents. Kate and the other woman (can't remember her name) were nice, polite people and were available when they were needed.
My apartment was spacious and well-laid out. Space was never a problem and there was adequate closet space as well.
The air-conditioning unit could have been placed a little better- it was in the bedroom and about 6 feet off the ground. If you're shorter than 5'4, you'll probably need a step stool to turn it on. No joke. It only worked in the bedroom, too. I left it on at full power for about 10 hours while I was gone for the day with the bedroom door open and the only place it felt cooler was the bedroom when I returned. However, it will keep you very cool even on the hottest summer nights while you sleep.
Heating, however, is another story. My apartment got stone-cold some nights during the winter. The heating system isn't a turn on and off kind of system- you just set it to one setting and leave it there all winter. My apartment faced north, so I got the coldest winds blowing at me. I left the heat at 5, the maximum level, and overall it was still pretty chilly, some nights cold as a tomb. Heat is included in rent, but, as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Bring a portable heater with you for really cold nights.
The kitchen is good. The oven and stove tops work great. The refrigerator and freezer are good, but my fridge needed a little extra push to shut sometimes. There are lots of cabinets, but none of them are particularly big. There's enough counter space to work with.
The bathroom was nice and well-lit. The shower was good, but it got dirty quite often, even though I cleaned it every 2 weeks. There are two sinks, but I only really ended up using one. Overall, no complaints here.
I had some pretty noisy upstairs neighbors. I could hear the thumping bass music pretty clearly, which was annoying. I really couldn't hear any voices, except during their super bowl party. My other neighbors were alright, though.
Rent was reasonable. But watch out- if you don't pay on time within a few days they can raise your rates retroactively. Also, as part of the agreement, you need to get your carpet professionally steam cleaned once during your stay if you want your full deposit back. There was a fire at one of the buildings in summer 2008, so now renter's insurance is required, not just optional.
Overall, there were a few things that could have gone better, but it was a good place to live. I may end up living here again one day, and it's one of the better places to rent. vWhRVi5nYYIuEh4W7K3l
