DON'T if you have any other choices...

Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2002
We moved into a building with quite nice neighbors, although facing a busy road. Management began having a huge turnover about a year ago; every time we went to the office someone new had replaced those we knew from before. Management has seemed to stabilize a bit, though.
The complex has in its entirety gone downhill in the past two years. The buildings are very shabby, with flat roofs that pose a big problem during Michigan winters. We have had water dripping into the center of our daughter's bedroom from melting snow - and I should mention we live on the SECOND floor!!!
Our neighbors have been pleasant, mostly older folks and young professionals in their 20s. Recently some undesireable people moved into our building and have been smoking pot at night, so much that the smell is strong in our apartment from under their doorway, up the stairwell, and under our door. The police, when called, just asked us how soon our lease was up. They were sympathetic, but of course they have bigger fish to fry. Never mind the drug dealing that's getting common around here.
The "physical fitness center" consists of a moldy basement room in the clubhouse with three broken down Nautilus machines from about 20 years ago and half a set of cheap dumbbells. It is dangerous and unpleasant.
Parking isn't too bad if you pay the extra $25 a month for a single carport. During some hours of the day residents are forced to park at other buildings and walk.
Facilities for children: suck. A broken down playgound about 20 feet square with toys that seem to have come from the streets of Sarajevo. Miniature golf: a pathetic attempt to attract potential renters. Was probably cool in 1970 - it hasn't changed since. Pools: one closed all summer, another opened but a poor guy drowned in it while my wife and two-year old daughter were in it. Fun.
I must also add the walls at Oakbrook are VERY thin. This can be embarassing to say the least...
We have had problems with a few cars being keyed in the lots about a year ago. Disgruntled evicted types are the prime suspects.
There is a beautiful walking path about 1/8th of a mile south of Oakbrook that my wife and daughter took daily walks on until a flasher exposed himself to them on one sunny afternoon.
Bottom line - if you're young, noisy, obnoxious and maybe white trash, you might just enjoy Oakbrook. If you have a career, a family with children, and enjoy peace and security, don't even think about it.
