Nothing But A Headache!!!

This was my first apartment after moving out with my parents. The place seemed nice and the apartment was a good size for one/two people.

Now for the rest of the story: When I was given a date that I could move in by, I was called two different times to delay. Finally after pressuring the building manager, I was told I could move in. The apartment was not even fully re-painted or clean. Now I was already packed and needed to move in so I let it go and agreed that it could be painted within the first week of me living there. This was not the case. I eventually had to paint myself (I was reimbursed for my time) and clean the entire place. This is just the first example of how ambitious and reliable the building manager is.

While I lived there, there were several instances when the "secured" entrance lock was broken, often leaving you unable to remove your key from the lock. Anyone could just walk in. The manager was notified on numerous occasions about this problem. I with-held my rent for a month just to get the point across. I was charged a late fee. The lock was finally fixed four months later. The light over my door in the hallway was never lit. The exit signs were never lit. The fire doors to the stairs were broken. There were no extinguishers in the fire emergency boxes nor anywhere I could see. The only good thing is that your right across the street from the fire department.

And therein lies the next problem, the noise. Expect to hear the fire department dispatched at least three times a day. The tenants can occasionally be noisey. The worst part of all is the fact that the sorry excuses for windows that are in the building do little to filter the outside noise coming in, especially during the summer. With it being on Center Rd., a busy street, you hear nothing but large trucks, motorcycles and crappy cars all day long. If you try to shut the windows, it immediately gets hot and you are forced to turn on the air conditioner (watch your utilities sky-rocket after that).

In the "laundry room", and I use the term loosely, there are two washers and two dryers. Oh, but the second dryer perpetually has a OUT OF ORDER sign on it. If you are not there immediately after your clothes are done either washing or drying, they are pulled out of the machine and tossed on a table.

The parking is okay but only if it's just you. You either have to pay for two spots (if any are available) or the second car must park on the city street. On three different occasions during the winter, the lot was not plowed until noon. Most of us have to work well before then. We got stuck in our own parking lot. There was always ice and rarely ever did it get salted. Oh, and while we lived there, my girlfriend got her car broken into and her CD Player stolen (nice location).

The hallways rarely ever got vacuumed and it wasn't very often that the grounds were mowed, not to mention that in the winter, the sidewalks didn't get cleared or salted.

The building manager is impossible to get a hold of, unless you owe money. He never answers the phone, rarely returns a message and almost never answers his door. Nothing is ever fixed in a timely fashion. He is definitely impossible to get a hold of after you move out.

And now comes the last, biggest and most frustrating problem, the security deposit. Now, I made sure that the apartment was immaculate, which is not the condition that I received it in. I spackled all the wholes from nails and clean thoroughly. I was told that there was no question that I would receive the full amount back. I filled out the necessary paper work and supplied my forwarding address. Then I waited. And waited....and waited. After three months I finally decided enough was enough and tracked down the problem. The manager said he lost the paper work. This happened twice (as noted by another reviewer, unorganized). Finally I was told my check would be there by a certain date. I waited, and waited....and waited. Called again, and was unable to get a hold of the manager. I received a letter from the owner's accountant that I owed money for unpaid rent, late fees and several other insane charges. The manager said he had no idea about that, that he would figure it out. And I waited (do you see a pattern here'). When he finally got back with me he said that the weekend help that doesn't normally deal with that stuff screwed up the paperwork (unorganized). Finally, five and a half months after I had moved out, I finally got my deposit check. Oh, did I forget to mention, after I reported them to the Better Business Bureau.

So unless you want to have all of this fun, I recommend that you find another place to live.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Sounds like more of a management issue than an actual apartment building/living condition issue though. Most things mentioned can be fixed if there is a good and caring management staff. Hmmm again sorry your first experience was so bad. My daughter did have a simular experience renting from a private landlord and well, poor management can be a down fall to a good living experience. She has since sworn off ever renting from another private landlord again and has since found a great kittle apartment community to reside in and loves it : ) Best wishes for you in the future.
