Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2006

I have lived at Southport for almost two years and am excited that my current lease is almost up. I have many issues with this complex.
- Every year, your rent goes up. It doesn't matter if you are a good tenant that is never late on rent or has never had any complaints or issues. It's frustrating that new people that are moving in around you are getting the same apartment for so much less.
- Parking is horrible. This past year they have put car ports in that take up over 50% of the parking. You cannot park in them unless you pay an additional fee each month. The bad part is that many of the car ports are not used because people are unwilling to pay extra (do you blame them) so now all the tenants are trying to use half the amount of parking spots. If you plan on getting home any later then 7 or 8 in the evening, don't plan on parking in front of your building.
- When I first moved into this apartment, everything seemed in great shape. But over time, you see how they have a cheap and unprofessional way of fixing things up. Paint jobs are horrible, water spots on the ceiling, roof shingles found on your balcony, appliances that are old and loud (dishwasher and washer/dryer), flooring in kitchen and bathroom have tears and rips that they tried filling with some kind of material that once you mop a few times comes off and leaves your floor looking dirty all the time, and many other issues.
- The walls are paper thin! You can hear everything going on in your neighbors apartments and if you get stuck on the 1st or 2nd floor, it sounds like your ceiling is falling in when your neighbors above you are home.
- The cable is thru Southport only and you cannot go thru any other company. The cable is crappy and the picture can be bad during snow or rain.
-You must get your internet service only thru SBC which sucks because in order to get internet, SBC demands you have a land line. So even if you have a cell phone and all you want is internet, you still have to get a phone line thru them. Cost = $70-80 a month!
-Lots of security issues. Several cars have been broken into, tailgates off trucks stolen, and seeing the police here is now an everyday thing.
- Maintence staff is pleasant, but the office staff is rude, unfriendly, and many times unsympathetic to your issues or needs.
- I wanted to get a pet but found out that you have to pay a deposit of half a month's rent plus $50 each month to have one animal. The bad thing is that the people that do have pet's let them crap everywhere and the staff does not do anything to make sure they clean up after their pet.
- The pool at the clubhouse was wonderful the first year I was here, but this past summer it has become a public pool. You can literally watch as people pull up and drop off tons of kids (with no supervision) and drive away. Lots of teenagers and the pool is usually packed now. They really need to keep the pool locked and only allow tenants keys to have access.
Overall, I have been very unhappy with this complex. I would recommend looking into a different apartment complex if you are moving to the area. I would say stay away from anywhere that is managed by the company Edward Rose. Not worth the time, money, or headache!

I thought I was the only person who felt this way. Just the other day I asked one of the rude office people if there were any benefits in renewing my lease and she said (in a very rude voice may I add) "NO. There are no benefits in living here." Great for business. AND Parking really IS horrible. |
