Nice Starter Apartment

If you happen to be moving to Boyne City and need a place to live, this apartment complex is about the best available. I'm not saying this apartment is flawless, I'm simply saying that in Boyne City where you will find either super-expensive condos to rent or nasty, dingy apartments/houses to live in, this place is the best choice.
The management is very nice and will work with you, even if your credit isn't so hot. As long as you can provide proof of your income and have a good initial meeting with the apartment manager, you should be fine.
Parking is nice and well lit while in front of the buildings. The side parking area is often very dark after nightfall and if I weren't in Boyne City, I would be very uneasy walking around at night trying to get my car. The garbage dumpster is also located far away from the main buildings and is a tad creepy to walk to at night too.
Most of the apartments have old-style cabinetry / counters & bathroom fixtures - so I won't universally say they all are great buys. Some apartments look like throwbacks to the 70s and 80s while others look like they're form the early 90s. I was lucky enough to get into a unit with a gray (NOT standard orange) kitchen counter and newly finished bathroom tiles/sink/toilet/etc. but most people renting will not.
The apartment I rented was roomy but was very squished in the living room, leaving very little area to arrange your furniture. Luckily the dining room area can be made into a living room extension - but I wish the living room area wasn't so long and skinny. Also, the carpeting throughout the apartment is thin, tough and not comfortable at all.
Both bedrooms were nice and the main bedroom had a very spacious walk-in closet and was well lit. The bathroom was clean and felt new, but mainly because they had put all new stuff in it. I had looked at other units here and most of the bathrooms felt very unclean and dingy. Water pressure for the shower was nice and the hot/cold for faucets seem to work very well too.
The kitchen was okay but the old wood cabinets made me feel a little sick to my stomach. Everything was basically glorified particle board and over time the building (or cabinets) muct have shifted because doors would not close and drawers would stick. I never felt like my dishes were clean in them.
The stove and refridgerator were in good shape, but not new at all. They both looked nice though and did their respective jobs so I'm not complaining. There are no dish washers in these apartments that I'm aware of.
It should also be noted that you CANNOT paint the walls in anyway OR have a pet (even a cat) here.
Laundry here is a nuiscance because of the small number of washers & dryers in each apartment "section" (I think 2 of each...maybe just 1 of each...can't remember) and the fact that you have to PAY for access to it. I think for the fairly high amount you are paying to live here, the least they could do is give you free access to laundry facilities. (Maybe use an electronic card system & give you 4-5 free loads of laundry a month')
Cable access and telephone access is available here, but don't expect to have too many choices. First off, there are two buildings you can get an apartment in. One has a normal satellite dish on top and it's just a small fee to get free local channels and cable stations brought into your unit. On the other building, an older dish is on top so you CAN'T get free local channels with your cable. You either have to go through Charter instead of Dish Network or buy an old funky rabbit ears set up for your TV. Either way, you're screwed.
There are no telephone jacks in any other place besides the living room area and in my unit, the cable jack in the bedroom was dead and useless (leaving just the one in the living room).
The apartment buildings have a distinct 1980s feel to them as you walk in and a musty smell as well. The smell sorta goes away in the units but expect to be airing your place out frequently *even in winter*. Heat is included and a thermostat is in each unit, so feel free to go as high or as low as you want - a very great feature.
My 2nd floor unit had a balcony with an overhang so you could have a grill or something outside. Didn't do anything for me but for smokers this might be a good place to set up shop if you don't want to get out of your smoke-free building everytime you wanna light up.
Concerning noise level, you better be a quiet person. I recieved a couple angry complaints from my neighbor below regarding my TV being too loud (which it wasn't) so apparently the walls and floors aren't too thick. If you are gonna have a girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse around a lot (you know what means!) or have kids making noise, keep in mind that you may get in trouble for making too much noise on a regular basis.
Finally, I want to comment on Boyne City itself. While this is the best apartment complex in Boyne City for people who can't get into the newer low-income apartments on the other side of town, I recommend not living here at all. Opt to live in Petoskey instead as it is only a 20 minute drive there and you'll be spending most of your time there anyways since there is nothing to do in Boyne for probably 85% of the year. If your job or whatever is closer to Gaylord, opt to move to Gaylord instead. And if your job is closer to Traverse, live in Traverse City. Boyne City is a very small town that has little to do and is mostly comprised of highschool or younger aged kids and adults in their late 30s or older. There are NO people in their early/mid-20s around, there is NO racial diversity in this town (as in most northern Michigan cities but still something to point out) and for the job opportunities available (very few!), the cost of living is quite high. Really think about moving to this city if you aren't a die-hard outdoors person all year round who has a significant other/spouse already in place...because in the Boyne City area, there's nothing to do but hunt and fish and ski and the dating scene is one of the worst I've ever encountered (Petoskey & Gaylord are also bad areas for dating twenty-somethings as well - Traverse is your best bet up north).
Anyways, lemme just say this too about these apartments - the manager is very understanding and will work with you if your living / financial situation changes unlike most places. So if you have no choice but to live in Boyne and need a cheap, nice place to live in, look no further.
