I'm not a tenant here, but did inquire about an apartment at Amber Creek Apartments in Troy. They did a credit check on me and my girlfriend and I have perfect credit and would be the main leasee, but my girlfriend doesn't and I was not planning on having her on the lease anyway. They told us that both tenants who occupy the unit must pass the credit check. Well, they ended up declining my application, because of my girlfriend. I don't think it had anything to do with her credit as my score is over 700 and I've been living in the same apartment for a few years now and have never been late on a payment. I strongly believe that we were declined, because we are an interacial couple. From the minute we walked into the rental office the lady acted very funny and was very unhelpful. I believe her name was -------. She didn't even have the professional decency to accompany us to go view the apartment. She just handed us the key and told us to go see it and come back to let her know what we think. When we went to the apartment the place was unfinished with ripped up carpet, splinters sticking out of the floors, which actually got me in the foot and trash and garbage every where. What kind of place lets people view apartments that are not even ready for show yet' I took pictures of the messy place with my camera phone, just so people would believe our story, because the place was literally a mess. This must have been a ploy to deter us from renting from them. However we were still interested, because the location was perfect and close to everything, but we both had a gut feeling after leaving that they were not going to rent to us and very much expected this as a possible outcome. It's not fair to be turned away, because we didn't fit into their preferred demographic and I will be filing a housing discrimination complaint against Amber Apartments for this. So if you are looking to rent from them and you are non-white keep this review in mind and be prepared for some difficulties.
